Q: The Volume Disk was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

go to disk utility and click on your Hard Drive in the left colum, then select the 'first aid' tab along the top of the window just below the 'new image' option. when this is selected click on the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button and let it run.

ERASE with zeros and restore from backup is really the safe and best method.

If you don't and can't then I vote for Disk Warrior.

You should have a couple backups and at least one of which is a bootable clone of your system.

Have you tried starting your computer with the Shift key pressed (and held until login screen appears) to start it in safe mode and see if the propblem persists. You can also press and hold the 'D' key to start a apple hardware test.

AHT will not scan for or find bad disk drive sector blocks, it might tell you your SATA chip.... no it won't do that either.... <g>

In a perfect universe Disk Utility First Aid, run from another hard drive ideally, or lacking that run from DVD. The shift key is suppose to check the drive journal and directory for out of sync errors and delete and rebuild extension and other system caches.

But you might want to backup first, and you could install OS X on another drive for one thing, or try using Disk Utility : Restore tab to make a full system copy of everything to another hard drive.

I would start buy trying safe mode, if the messge stil occurs then turn off and turn back on when you hear the chime press and hold the D button until the hardware test starts.

It does not check externally connected hardware components such as USB devices or FireWire devices. It will give you some information which will tell us if anything is wrong.

are you able to assist? I used disk utility and the erase options are greyed out. - if this is corrupt and I re-install without erasing, will the new install also show as corrupt?

To erase you need to boot from another partition or, to erase the entire drive, then of course from another drive or device - USB flash installer perhaps.

Clone your system so you can boot from there.
