Connecting to wifi?

Have both iPad and MacBook pro, for some reason my MacBook will no longer connect to Internet. Worked yesterday and just shows an "!" in the airport icon. Message states that airport has sel-assigned ip address and will not connect to Internet. I have tried all I can find on-line but no luck. Not very computer savy but someone out here has had same issue. Ugh!!!!!!
