My apple keyboard is not recognized by my iPad. It see's the device, but it is not paired. What should I do?

Not all of the keyboards are compatible with the iPad.
The original Apple Wireless Keyboard, introduced in 2003, is not compatible:
Apple Wireless Keyboard (2003): Features a white case and uses four AA batteries.
If your (aluminium) keyboard is new enough (I don't know how new it needs to be, mine's from September 2010) what worked for me (after a fair amount of futzing around) was just to power down my iMac desktop.
Then my (new) iPad paired up with the keyboard without difficulty.
My ipad see my apple keyboard but it will not pair..what do I need to do. The instructions with the keyboard are how to pair with an imac not ipad.
