Edits in PS CS5 to show up in Aperture

How can I get photos from Aperture then edited in PS CS5 (selected as external editor) to show up in Aperture in edited form after saving in PS?

The file was a raw file, it opened in the PS raw converter, then I opened in PS made an adjustment and selected save.

That's the same as a Save As... when the Raw opened in the Raw it was then saved as something (probably a psd) and sent on to Photoshop. So you sent a Raw and got back a psd created by Photoshop and Aperture knows nothing of its existence.

Aperture cannot send Raw-files to an external editor - it sends either PSD or TIFF-files. You select if you want PSD or Tiff in the Aperture Preferences -> Export -> External Editor File Format. In this Preferences Tab you also set Photoshop to be used as external Editor. (if you do not need layers in PS, choose TIFF, that causes less problems than PSD)

To send an image to Photoshop for editing, you select an image in the Aperture Browser, ctrl-click and select "Edit with Adobe Photoshop ..." from the Pop-Up menu. Aperture will convert your image to TIFF or PSD and send it to Photoshop. Edit it and save; you should see your edited image in the Browser alonside the original image.

If Photoshop started a raw converter, I suspect (as Kirby obviously does) , that you did not send the image to PS from Aperture, but opened the image in Photoshop using the Media Browser and saved the result in the Aperture library. So how did you open the image in PS?

Thank you, Léonie,

I did open the image from Aperture. I have CS5 slected as my external editor and I selected the image and from the photos menu, selected edit with Adobe Photoshop CS5 which opened Adobe's raw converter. The photo was listed with a tiff extension. Since the save dialogue in Photoshop opens only save as after editing, how should I save the image to get it back into Aperture?

Thanks, Linda

I choose file, save, in Photoshop after making an edit. The save window opens, but at the top it has "save as" and I did not open the "save as" window in the Photoshop edit menu, only "save". The window that then opens shows the same name for the photo (but I could change if I wish. I change the format to TIFF (since tiff is how the photo appeared in the edit window) I do not change the location for saving and select save but it does not go back to Aperture.

The save window opens, but at the top it has "save as" and I did not open the "save as" window in the Photoshop edit menu, only "save"

Then maybe you did some kind of edit, that requires a "Save as", like adding layers. When I press ⌘-S the image is saved, without any File chooser dialogue. Which directory is shown in the "Save as" panel? Does this save to the directory inside the Aperture Library where your image is located and overwrite the original image?

You may want to check the Photoshop Preferences: There is a Preference setting relating to File Management (unfortunately my PS-CS5 version is in english and I am not sure about the english name of the setting) - it is the third tab in the list of preferences: These should be set to

  • Append extensions: always
  • Save as to the original folder
  • Ask before storing Tiff with layers
  • Maximize PSD compatibility

Hopefully somebody with an english PS-CS5 version will chime in and can give you the exact english names of these settings.

Linda,

If you have the your Camera Raw Preferences settings for TIFF file handling set to 'Automatically open all supported TIFFs', then Photoshop will automatically invoke ACR to load the image.

Setting it the preferences back to the default 'Automatically open TIFFs with settings' should prevent ACR from loading and you image should be loaded in Photoshop. The normal save command should then work.

Hope this helps. 😉

Corky, you solved the problem! Thank you. Is there a way for the thumbnail image in the split view to show the Photoshop edits? I have added some text to the Photoshop image and it does not show up in the split view thumbnail, it does show up when I select it and it then appears in the main viewer.

Also, if I do want to do some edits to the raw image, would I have to export the image to Photoshop, edit in ACR and then import it back to Aperture?

Thank you.

It sounds like you need to update the thumbnail for the image edited in PS.

Browser view > select image > Photos menu. You will see options for updating, deleting and generating thumbnails and previews. Note - pressing the 'Option' key while in that menu will change the preview option to 'Generate Preview' if needed.

Outside of that, I can't think of another cause, but others here know alot more than I do about Aperture.

If you want to use ACR for working with the RAW file, you would want to export the Master > open in ACR > open in PS > save as TIFF, PSD or JPEG > import back to Aperture. This is because ACR and Aperture don't read each others RAW decoding parameters (it's one or the other for rendering the RAW file to a viewable image). 😉
