Apple does the unlocking after the carrier the iPhone is carrier locked with contacts Apple with an unlock request for the iPhone. Apple will not do this unless the carrier contacts them with the unlock request, and AT&T does not unlock an iPhone for any reason or under any circumstances.

Apple does not initiate any unlocks at all.

ONLY the carrier to which it locked can do this. No one else at all.

Locking is at the discretion of the carrier, not the manufacturer.

AT&T does not unlock ANY iPhone model.

Okay then. There are several companies besides the mobile phone companies themselves that offer an imei unlock solution for the Apple iphone in it's various incarnartions. ALL of them charge you money, some more than others. Some of these companies do have links to or are involved in or with the less than savoury aspect of software hacking. I deplore this action which is why i went down the official apple itunes route which as previously mentioed ( since deleted) worked perfectly. As of 7. April 2012 or thereabouts a very large monopolistic American Phone giant will unlock an iphone as long as certain criteria or followed.

Jorge, it is perfectly possible to do what you want to do but it may cost you some money.
