Convert it to QuickTime using MPEG Streamclip or Compressor. Where did this stuff come from? Try to go back to the original file.
It's a time lapse from a Canon 7D (using after effects). A friend of mine did it and gave me the file so that I could use it in a project we're working on. I tried to convert it to Streamclip and it still won't import.
A Canon 7D shoots QuickTime. There is absolutely no reason to export an m2v file from After Effects. The file should be exported in QuickTime using the ProRes codec.
P.S. What did you convert it to in Streamclip? You need to convert to QuickTime. The details depend on the exact specs of the media, but it would be better to get the original file made correctly and not have to convert it from a heavily compressed format.

My operating system is a Mac OS X Lion and from what I read, it should have no problem reading the file...which it doesn't. I can open it up and look at the time lapse on my computer. I just can't import it into Final Cut X. I guess I just don't know how to convert the file to quicktime. I thought I was doing it right, but obviously something is missing (like my indepth knowledge of codecs).
FCP iz and always has ben QuickTime based. m2v is an MPEG format.

I don't know what this means? The m2v file? Yes, you can look at it on your computer. It's the format used by iPad and Apple TV. You cannot edit it. It's not a production format. It's a delivery format. I don't know why the material from the 7D was made into a delivery format when it was going to be edited. Either you can have it remade into a production format, or you can convert it. The former would be much better. m2v is heavily compressed for use on mobile devices and such.
Ahhh! Well that makes total sense. I'm still relatively new to the plethora of codecs. I did not create the m2v file...one of my colleagues did. After a lot of whining and complaining from me, he is going to create a new file using Quicktime. Thank you for all your help. I appreciate it.
