Old Wacom Tablet with New MacBook Pro

I have a new(ish) MacBook Pro, bought within the last year. I, also, have a old(ish) Wacom tablet, bought maybe 2003(yeah i know it's out of date). My tablet came with software, etc., etc., and it said that it was compatible with Mac. When I tried to start it up and couldn't get anything to load or install at all. It still works when I hook it up through USB but it's kind of slow and I tend to have to "walk" the cursor across the screen (i.e. move cursor, pick up pen and set down to move again). Is my Wacom too old for my Pro? Or is there something else that might be going on?

Thanks for any help!!

P.S. It [the computer] seems to heat up quite a bit in the process of working. If anyone has any tips or explanation on this as well it would be greatly appreciated!
