duplicate birthdays

I have a few "duplicate" birthdays. Here's what I tried to resolve: I have deleted all contacts (after backing up my contacts). The birthdays are not connected to contacts, since the duplicates exist even when there are no contacts. I also have disabled iCloud, and there is only one calendar account. There must be a file somewhere where these birthdays are cached on my mac, but where?

So what did you do to remove the duplicates? I was given an article with instructions to follow (see link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4337 but that was very complex and it created new problems which took me a while to solve, so I am a bit scared now. Birthdays are showing up fine on my iMac and on my Macbook Air, but they are still doubled in icloud. I have established that duplicates do not come from my mac contacts. I also switched off sync from contacts and calendar in Outlook for Mac but that had no effect either.
