How long does it take for screen burn to go away?

There is a faint image stuck on my screen. I have tried setting the sleep to a solid white for the past 24 hours and it doesn't seem to have helped much (maybe a little). How long does it usually take for the burn to go away. Are there other methods I should try? Any help is apprieciated.
