iPod restarting itself after disconnecting from computer

I have been researching this problem for hours on end today.

My iPod classic 120 GB resets itself every time it is connected to the computer.

When it is disconnected from the computer you can use it and scroll through everything but it has nothing on it, no music, pictures, videos, nothing.

But when you go to the settings it says that all the space is used up by "other" (the orange color).

My computer will not recognize the iPod when it is connected in regular mode but it will recognize it as E:\ when it is in disk mode.

The only problem is I cannot format it using the regular format tool on windows.

the windows format tool says it can't be formatted.

I have run the manual diagnostic check myself and everything seems fine.

I just need to know how to fix it.

I have restarted my computer with it plugged in I have started iTunes with it plugged in I have also run the Ipod Updater and it says "Invalid iPod service version."

Please Please Please Help.......😟 😢....

To be of any assistance,

  1. Which version of iTunes are you using?
  2. What is the iPod firmware number as shown in the iTunes summary page?
  3. When was the last time you sync the iPod Successfully with no problems? (any Software update snce then)

Also do a Disk diagnostic as posted regularly by tt2

Dont worry about the Mac user DD is for iPod and not the Computer OS.

Reply with these info and we shall try to help troubleshoot.

Thank for the info.

Can you do a Hard Reset as below

  1. After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
  2. Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the next step
  3. Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
  4. Then release the buttons
  5. Select your preferred language.

Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/

  1. Put your iPod into Disk Mode
  2. Connect the iPod to a High Power USB 2.0 port at the back of the PC, and never to the front USB port or any USB Hub.
  3. Disconnect all other USB devices, except the mouse and keyboard.
  4. Launch iTunes and wait a while for iTunes to recognise it.
  5. Restore the iPod, the latest software should be 2.0.4 for your Model.

I'm worried about your message "Invalid iPod service version.", hopefully you have not jailbreak it, or else try to uninstall iTunes completely and delete all iTunes references, files, folders and clean the Registry, then re-install iTunes. But no worry, do the first part and see the outcome.

Good Luck!

After you uninstall iTunes, go to

C:\program files\itunes floder, and delete everything in it.

then go to

C:\my document\my music\itunes

delete itunes.library.genius.itdb

and in ../itunes music

delete itunes.preferences.plist

Then reinstall iTunes, and do the Disk mode and update your iPod firmware, Restore and Sync.

If this doesn't work bring it in to Apple Genius.

It's all got to do with finalising the iPod filesystem, when it finished downloading all your Gigabytes of files from iTunes, unfortunately like some other people experience, even when you get a "OK TO DISCONNECT" screen it may not be safe, especially if your iPod hardisk has a high Pending Sector Number.

So do sync in batches, instead of 160 GB at one go, try 10 GB, which is actually quite big, have you ever try to zero the 160GB hardisk with verification, it would take at least 5 hours.

Another alternative, which I do, is tick Manually Manage, tick Enable Disk Use and drop only my latest songs to the iPod icon folders and these are less than 1 GB per update.

Have anice day!
