Do you have an AirPlay device like AppleTV or an AirPort Express, and on the same wi-fi network as your iPhone? You won't see the icon if you don't have an AirPlay device on the same network.
Yes. I have the AppleTV and they are on the same wi-fi network... even when i double click the home button and scroll to the left, the icon is not there.
Is this an Apple TV 1 or Apple TV 2? If the latter make sure the software is updated.
First apple tv and it's updated. I know the apple tv is working as well as my macbook because they linked up with no problems. something isnt working correctly with my iphone, but i can't figure it out.

That's the problem, 1st gen ATV does not support AirPlay.
My father has the same devices and it works for him...
No, it doesn't.
If you read this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4437
it appears that only Apple TV 2 supports AirPlay from iPad, iPhone, or Touch. According to the article, the 1st generation Apple TV supports AirPlay only from a computer (which I didn't think was possible at all).

Nope.
Well, sort of. The last row of the table in that article suggests that ATV 1 can do AirPlay from a computer, but not from a device. Perhaps that's what Dad is doing ....
Even in the user guide it mentions airplay, so maybe its the second??... either way, I know my father has the same one and it works for him.
He uses the airplay mirroring from his phone onto the apple tv.
Then he has an Apple TV 2, not the original (or both). You cannot mirror to the ATV 1, use it for AirPlay from an iDevice, nil, nada.
NO: "Nope" was in the context of this discussion - why he can't Airlplay from his iPhone. He cannot send Airplay from his iPhone to an Apple TV1.
The original Apple TV was meant to play movies sent from the computer. That's what it does - that's all it does.
Mirroring is the video aspect of AirPlay, and only iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and Apple TV 2 support mirroriing. If he can project what's going on from his iPhone to his ATV, he must have an ATV 2 (and an iPhone 4S).
You'd know if you had an ATV 2 ... is is quite a lot smaller than ATV 1 and has no hard drive. So again, do you have the 1st or 2nd generation ATV?
