Unlocking Locked Drive, Ignore Ownership
Hello,
I do not really enjoy working under the hood of my computer but was forced to this past weeks.
All is running good now and I just want to share it.
Unlocking drive permissions is a recent success and this solution worked for me:
(FOR VOLUMES WITH SINGLE-WORD NAMES)
- sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
- sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
- sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
- sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename* <HIT RETURN/ENTER HERE>
(MULTI-WORD VOLUME NAMES)
- sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
- sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
- sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
- sudo chmod -N /Volumes/firstname\ secondname\ thirdname\ fourthname\ fifth etc.
My follow up question is:
- What does Ignore Ownership really do?
- Is it safe/recommended for smoother collaborative workflow, say a shared/swaping external drives?
