battery indicator always says 50%

Recently had to wipe hd and reisnstall operating system because of bad permissions and disk errors. Yes I tried fixing them first. Been a mac user for over 20 years so please keep that in mind before responding.

Everything is working fine except... battery indicator stays at 50% and never warns me before shutting down...

Other articles say my battery is junk, but how does a system reinstall wreck a battery. I think its a glitch with the software, bad preferences or something.

Anyone have experience with this? Running os 10.6.8 on 2.26 GHz intel core Duo macbook pro.

I miss the old days when I could trouble shoot anything by trashing preferences!

Its just like cars and refridgerators... 25 years ago things were built to be fixed, now they are built to be thrown away 😟

If you go to About This mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power, what does the report say about the battery, its Condition, Capacity, remaining charge, Cycle count, Voltage? If the battery is Normal and all other prarameters are as expected for a battery of that age and cycle count, then there could be something going wrong in the charge reporting. Does the remaining charge to capacity ratio equal the reported battery charge?

As I wrote my question I found my answer... I was basically scared to just start trashing prefs cause the names these days are so cryptic, but I found one called 'com.apple.PowerManagement.plist'

I trashed it, restarted and now the indicator is ticking up again with the power adapter on. Before I could plug it in and nothing happened.

As said in the discussion title, it was always on 50% before doing this, so I think I solved it.

Sorry I wasted your time but, maybe this will help others.

And the green status lights on the side worked properly, when the battery was dead they showed 1 or zero dots and when the power adapter was on for a long time they showed 8 green dots.

Hi Gambo74, i have a similar problem with the battery indicator stuck on 47%, and nit correctly reflecting the reaming/charging time.

in apple store the run an MRI scan and found no problem with the battery or the adaptors.

Look like you find the way to solve the problem. Great !

where can I find the "powermanagement plist" (files ?) i have to delete ?

thanks

gerg55:

Before blindly telling people to buy batteries you should have all the necessary info... I was told to buy a battery by someone but at least I knew better. All I had to do to fix the problem was trash a preference and restart the computer. Perhaps it is something simple like this?

Of course that is good advice for you if you sell batteries. HA!

Are you sure you were at the top level library?

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

That's the Library at top-level, not inside your Home folder.

Before assuming I don't know what I'm doing, don't make comments. I'm simply stating what I had in my personal experience. I researched other options, but no fixes worked. I even called in to Apple, and they had no suggestions. Generally when the battery life goes down to a point that it can no longer be charged (battery memory), the only way to fix it is to discharge it completely, and even that sometimes doesn't work. I was relating this thread to my own experience.

Thanks you very much all for your comments and suggestions.

According to the "MRI scan test" that was performed on my Mac in the local Apple lab few days ago, the power adaptor and the battery are operating ok, and that the battery in charging. The technical guys there suggested to performed a battery calibration (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 ), i'm doing that now for the 2nd time.

My first assumption when the problem started was that I have to replace the battery, but the guys in the Apple lab was not sure that replacing the battery will solve the problem, as It may be a problem in the "software" or some communication interface between the software and the battery hardware.

After charging for say 2 hours, I can run on battery for few hours, this I think also an indication that the battery is charging OK.

I'm currently in the charging stage of the calibration process, so I will send you later today the information your required. Nevertheless as far as I remember :

  1. The com.apple.PowerManagement.plist I removed was certainly under the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ (or one of its sub dirs) and not under my home dir.
  2. As to the System Report on the Power supply under my Mac, I don’t recall all the details (I will send it later today), but I looked at that in several occasions, and was also examined by the Apple technician in Apple lab and the battery look normal as expected/
  3. Does the remaining charge to capacity ratio equal the reported battery charge? => NO !. that I think is the main problem !

The indicator is ALWAYS stuck on 47% , the timing reaming can fluctuated from 20 hours to 45 minutes regardless of the actual remaining time.

During charging the indicator show "47% charging" And after a about 2 hours it change to "47% Full"

Thanks

Razo
