I am one of many people who receive text messages that are blasted out to everyone who is on the distribution list. It is important that the sender knows who is replying to the text that was sent; especially when fifty to a hundred people are replying. Think of what goes on in the emergency community. First responders who reply to emergency notifications via text page must be able to have their employee IDs or radio call signs or whatever included in their responses. That is just one example of why you would need a signature. Regarding the purpose of SMS, I'm sure you are aware of how the intended uses of technologies often evolve into other uses that the designers never considered. Think of microwaves, or even the Internet for example. However you feel about SMS, it will be what the users of it want it to be or it will become obsolete.

Regardless, a simple e-signature (iSignature?) feature is not too much to ask for something as sophisticated as an iPhone.

I understand about blasting messages, however if messages are sent to multiple users, then they are identified already to the sender. I still do not consider it a design flaw, however if you would like to let Apple know how you feel about a feature you would like to see, then go to www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link. Not everything fits everyone and I understand that. I was just voicing my opinion. While technology can advance, I find that SMS is not always reliable and as such I would hate to depend on it for all emergency situations. They are carrier functions and carriers can fail. Given that, many US carriers do not provide information about delivery receipt of an SMS so it is hard to prove if one was received. I know this is a little off topic, but it is in support of your mention of emergency communications.

I found a work around to this design flaw. Create a shortcut that you enter at the end of your text messages.

Go to SETTINGS > GENERAL > KEYBOARD > SHORTCUTS

For example, I use "jjj" as a shortcut for my e-signature, so after I'm done typing my text message, I double tap the space bar which automatically inserts a period and space (this shortcut is already included on iPhones), then I type jjj to automatically insert my e-signature, then I send the message.

It's a work around, but it works. I don't get why Apple doesn't include this essential feature. This is something that comes with LOTS of other phones.

In my opinion, and I know that is just mine, an SMS is a short message. That is what the first two letters of SMS stand for. These are short messages to people you know, Why would you need a signature, they know who you are. If you need to add a signature, then send them an email. The whole purpose of these was to be short and to the point, not to use too much data and to keep them under 160 characters. Signatures are just useless data.
