Aug 31, 2013 11:40 AM in response to Ras34by turingtest2,Have you read the linked post? Near the beginning it describes how to enter the iPod's diagnostic screens and read off the hard drive SMART stats. These may give a picture of how good or bad the drive is and whether any restore attempt is likely to be successful or not.

Aug 31, 2013 12:13 PM in response to Ras34by turingtest2,Sorry, your post history wasn't listing the week old post and I didn't see it further up the page...
Refracts: 232
Reallocs: 547
Pending Sectors: 61
Power on Hours: 1466
Start/Stop:341
Tepm Current: 28c
Temp min: 19c
Temp MAx: 41c
Any change since you posted these numbers at all? Have you tried erasing the device's hard drive as described in the section after DFU restore yet? If not that is what I would try next.

Aug 31, 2013 12:28 PM in response to familyfishnby Ras34,Windows was unable to conplete the format. That's the message I'm seeing. A lot I'm seeing exFat in file system should I change it to fat 32
-
Aug 31, 2013 12:43 PM in response to Ras34by turingtest2,Recent version of Windows have got funny about giving full control over the format. It may not offer FAT32 as an option, though that is what it should be. A quick format may work, and in principle if you use the "wrong" format, then a DFU restore should correct it, but at this point I can't make promises. I know I've done a low-level format at one point and successfully restored the device afterwards, but it was some time ago. There is also the idea of restoring on a Mac and then on a PC as suggested earlier.

Sep 10, 2013 8:59 PM in response to turingtest2by wmhooper,Please can you help me, I have a 160gb iPod classic, someone gave it to me and said it had hardy been used. Trying to sync music is fails after a few minutes, likewise trying to copy files it fails after a few minutes. I have tried it on two computers one XP, one Windows 8. Here are the diagnostics:
Retracts: 4
Reallocs: 3360
Pending Sectors: 264
PowerOnHours: 170
Start/Stops: 17704
Should I try to format it or just send to Apple?
Many thanks, William

Sep 15, 2013 3:35 PM in response to familyfishnby Bumbershoot,I can't even get to the diagnostics menu. My Classic
- reboots but won't go to DFU or any other diagnostic page, it just goes back the "language" setting
- ITunes tries to restore but sort of gives up, saying the new hardware is messed up
- iTunes doesn't acknowledge the device is connected. After I restore it, it shows up but doesn't allow me to synch.
Is it cooked?
thanks

I'd start with the DFU restore in Corrupt iPod classic. Since the device is likely out of warranty and you're not the original owner I doubt Apple will want to help.

Hmm, not seen that behaviour personally. Getting into DFU mode can be a bit hit & miss, but if the firmware is up to asking for a language then it should be able to get into diagnostic mode unless there is an issue with the control buttons. I assume this is a 6th gen. Older models may have slightly different sequences for diganostics & DFU modes.

Sep 15, 2013 4:22 PM in response to turingtest2by Bumbershoot,Thank you. No, I don't think it's a 6th gen. I think it's 4th or 5th.
