Q: iPod Classic

I have an iPod classic and I cannot download any songs on it.  It is constantly freezing my iPod when it is connected to my computer and it is constantly freezing my iTunes.  I have reset my iPod and tried to restart my iTunes but nothing is working.  I even followed the instructions on this site and I cannot even get 2 songs to show up on my iPod.  What do I do now?

Nothing else that will be sure to work. Probably time to bite the bullet.

I did purchase (with a warranty) a refurbished ipod classic 7th gen from a gamestore. It is still having the same issues, not synching all the way or too slowly. This was all trying automatic syncing. Do you think manually transfering the songs from the library to the device may work. Also, if not that, can it be the computer? If I transfer all the music from one laptop to another by flash drive or such will the syncing maybe work then?

There could be a problem with the source drive. See this migrate iTunes library post for transfer directions. SyncToy is particularly useful if there is an issue as it can skip over problem files where Windows Explorer would just crash out, and you can run it again to have subsequent goes at copying anything that would not copy first time.

Hello. Manually putting the music on stalled out around 8000 songs. Transfering the itunes library to another laptop did not seem to help. Trying the automatic sync, it stalled around song 7000. Messages such as the folder or disk can not be found and such  like saying it is corrupted often come up. I'm wondering if it is something with the itunes version (It is updated) or something else? Maybe there are problem files, but I am guessing that's unlikely. Anyway, I don't have much knowlege on computers so do you have any more suggestions/places to look? Thanks.

I think my hard drive may be failing. I have an iPod Classic 80GB, I'm not sure what generation it is but it was bought in 2007 new. I am having a lot of problems with it, I can't plug it in my laptop without it crashing iTunes and when I do manage to make it work by some miracle it takes so long to sync any songs and even then it gives up and says there's an error and all songs are wiped off. I ran the test you spoke about in the post and here are the results:

    Retracts: 9

    Reallocs: 4928

    Pending Sectors: 80

    PowerOn hours: 460

    Start/Stops: 25018

    Temp: Current: 33c

    Temp: Min: 51

Temp: Max: 254c (this sounds bad...!)

Comparing them to yours this does not look hopeful!

I hope you can shed some light.

    Thanks

Agreed, it doesn't look good. Try the DFU restore to see if you can clear the pending sectors, then try refilling with small steps using the "Break up large transfers" steps.

    Thanks for your quick response!

Could you please explain what a DFU restore is? :)

See Corrupt iPod classic, details are in one of the sections of that post.

    Hi

I did the DFU restore like you suggested and it seems to be working now!

I am adding an album at a time and that seems to be doing the trick.

I am not experiencing any of the previous problems I had before.

    Thanks for your help

You should be able to add data in bigger chunks than that, I just found that when the queue was thousands of tracks long it had a very occasional tendency to fall over corrupting the device's database.

What is a bad number of reallocs and pending sectors? I can't find anywhere it says how many is too many or "bad"..so any help would be appreciated.  And 2nd question before I try it, will the

Mac: Run Disk Utility / Repair Disk for the equivalent process you mentioned delete my songs or reformat my ipod?

    My stats are:

    Retracts: 85

    Reallocs: 10

    Pending Sectors:6

    PowerOn Hours: 727

    Start/Stops: 14084

It won't recognize on my mac itunes and it says "Mac OS X can’t repair the disk “AVERY.” "You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."   Idk why it is doing this.  It won't even show up on my itunes and i have thousands of songs that are on my ipod and not on my computer..

I just sent a message a few minutes ago. I still want to know about what I asked..but wanted to just add: for some reason after i did the manual diagnostics test to get that info i connected my ipod to my computer again to see what happened(if anything different) it popped up about 4 times sayiong I don't have permission to sync automatically(which I don't want to). Anyhow the big problem was that it showed an error and wouldn't even show up in itunes and now..it does. I'm confused as to why like what changed?

Your songs should always be on your computer, and backed up too. The first section of the Corrupt iPod classic post deals with recovery. Do it now.

Most likely you have a FAT32 formatted iPod which the Mac won't run repairs on. Once you've rescued your data you could let the Mac reformat if you want.

There are no absolute limits on the numbers, reallocs and pendings are both low, but the you need to restore or reformat to conver the pendings. Any data there is still "live" and the device is likely to hang when it tries to read it.

Okay thanks! A lot of my songs aren't on there because I bought it used from a friend so I have a ton of playlists and songs that are on my ipod but not on my computer. Will the recovery link you mentioned delete all my songs and everything? Like reformat it?
