Oct 14, 2012 7:35 AM in response to turingtest2by Duncan1992,No I haven't, I was hoping there was a way around restoring as re-syncing over 12,000 tracks will take quite a while. Failing this I'll restore it later.

Oct 14, 2012 7:42 AM in response to Duncan1992by turingtest2,Restoring should release those pending sectors. If they contain any data that needs to be accessed during syncing that would be one possible reason why things fall over.
Probably worth using the "break up large transfers" tip back on page one of this thread...

I have tried everything apple has suggested except using an apple brand cord to restore, (I'll be borrowing one and trying it soon.)
I came across this article on here,
http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
My only issue with trying this is that my vista computer wants to format to NTFS which I have also read Apple doesn't support. Only other format I'm showing is exFAT.
(supposed to be in response to turingtest2. my apologies)

Oct 14, 2012 8:39 AM in response to Blondie89by turingtest2,In principle iTunes should be able to reformat to FAT32 if doesn't like the format. The alternative approach is to delete absolutely everything inside the drive using Windows Explorer set to display hidden & system files, empty the trash, then try again. That should release all the pending sectors.

Oct 14, 2012 8:41 AM in response to turingtest2by Blondie89,I will try this then. I hope this works.
lat question for now, Does it really matter what USB cable I use?

Oct 14, 2012 8:56 AM in response to Blondie89by turingtest2,If it works, no. If it doesn't then trying another cable is a sensible troubleshooting step.

Oct 14, 2012 2:26 PM in response to turingtest2by Blondie89,I think my ipod is calling it quits. My reallocation number doubled, reformatting doesn't seem to be happening and I can't access the drive without it being formatted. I'm at a total loss.

Oct 14, 2012 2:34 PM in response to Blondie89by turingtest2,It may be toast. Max temp. of 58c means it could have been hot enough to warp components at some point. Sometimes there are small pockets of bad sectors that can be mapped out and normal service is resumed, other times the initial pending count just marks the tip of the iceberg.

Hi TT2 - yup, tried everything, won't even allow me to erase the iPod :
- Windows and iTunes don't recognise it unless it's in disk mode.
- iTunes won't restore it - get "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod", followed by "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1439)".
- When I try to erase it, I get "Windows was unable to complete the format".
- If I click on it via My Computer, I get "Please insert a disk into removable disk (I:)".
- If I select "Properties", it comes up without a name, as a removal disk as type, no file system, both used space and free space at zero, and capacity at zero also.
- If I go to error-checking, I get "The disk check could not be performed because Windows cannot access the disk".
- If I try defrag-ing, the disk doesn't show up.
Infuriating isn't the word!
I've also just run into an issue where the "super fix" of formatting the disk wasn't working for me either.
iPod Classic went on the fritz today just after syncing. Couldn't restore via iTunes, kept getting 1439 errors, Windows wouldn't format as FAT32 from a command prompt, claimed the "Volume is too big for FAT32". Finally tracked down EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition (Free) and formatted as FAT32 with 128k clusters. The iPod is filling back up again. Might be worth a shot here...
