How to convert songs to ringtones?

It is an m4a. How do I convert it to an m4r?

Before you add the file back to iTunes, change the filename to something.m4r.

i have copied my ringtone to the desktop and deleted from itunes,i also moved it from desktop back to the itunes library but its still not showing on tones,i even rename it from m4a to m4r..what do i do please?

Hi Chris, I tried following the steps you gave to make myself a ringtone in the newest version of iTunes, but iTunes won't let me convert the song I want to as ANY type of file out of iTunes. When I try to do this, I get a message that says "This song could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats."

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to solve this problem? Thanks!

Did you also choose all tones, or selected tones and then select the tone you wanted to add?
