    1: Backup your users file folders off the machine to a storage drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect all drives and any extra devices.

     

    2: Stick the 10.6 install disk into the machine and reboot holding the c key down.

     

    3: Under the Utilities menu in the Installer screen choose Disk Utility, use it to Repair the drive. (don't erase)

     

    4: Quit and install 10.6 onto the drive, it will replace your 10.6.4 with a disk copy.

     

    5: Reboot and log in, now use Software Update under the Apple menu to get current, check again to make sure there is nothing left to install. You will be on 10.6.8 and all Security updates applied.

     

    6: Now go around and reinstall any third party software that ceases to function, from original sources, only a few might not as they install kext files into OS X. Make sure the third party software is updated to work with 10.6.8

     

    7: If your machine refuses to boot, simply hold the shift key down and then update your third party software (disables kext files) then reboot normally (enables kext files)

     

     

    You should check Brother for a updated printer driver installer, not use the old one on the disk, which is what I suspect occured in your case.

     

    But you have other problems, your on 10.6.4 and it's outdated, as well perphaps have other issues (security etc) which the OS X 10.6 overwrite will solve in one stroke.

    Do you have a Brother printer connected or installed? It looks like a Brother printer utility is crashing.

     

    Check the hard drive's Library folder, and look inside StartupItems. Is there something there relating to Brother printers. You might temporarily move it out to see it that helps. Also, check in System, Library, StartupItems.

     

    Also check in System Preferences, Accounts, and select your account, select the Login Items tab. See what's there, something relating to a Brother printer you might remove or disable to see if that helps?

     

    If you are still using that printer, you could also try disconnecting it temporarily or simply reinstalling the software that came with it.

    Thanks. This is a work computer I have recently been assigned to. Since I don't trust a machine that used to belong to someone else, I'll try to track down all the install discs and reinstall OS X if possible.

    Well if it's not your machine, then check with the powers to be and/or the IT department first why it hasn't been updated to 10.6.8.

     

    It's possible your expected to keep the machine updated, it's also possible that there is a particular reason why it wasn't updated to 10.6.8, like a certain driver or something isn't working with 10.6.8.

     

    It might be you just got it and nobody knows how to keep it updated.

     

    The common misperception is Mac's don't require anyone to do anything, when in fact Mac's do need to be maintained, just not on the severity level as Windows PC's.

     

    1: Software Update under the Apple menu

     

    2: Keep your browser plug-ins like Flash (especially) up to date. Use this checker, works for many browsers.

    3: Check the status of any other software installed, third party browsers, plug-ins, software etc for updates if they don't provide a auto-update feature (if they do make sure it's turned on)

    There have been a lot of strange things happening with this Mac Pro (10.6.4). Multiple external drives have become unreadable (even when I try them on other computers) At this point, I'd like to basically wipe it and start over - to be as clean as possible.     No.  They have to be the disks that came with your mac pro or the retail version of Snow Leopard.
