Q: What am I missing here...?

So I understand that I plug my ethernet from my modem to the Express station. Then I setup my network, give it a password, yadda yadda...

Done. Success. But if I want to use airtunes and move the Express into a different room, the light turns from green to orange, and blinks. Obviously, because the ethernet cord is now disconnected, and it is not receving a signal.

Am I missing something here....?

Do I have to have the ethernet cord plugged in all the time? That would mean that the Express has to stay near my iMac...which defeats the purpose of using airtunes, when I could just use iTunes on my computer.

TOTALLY confused right now. Please help!

Yes. If you set it up that way then you need to keep it plugged into your modem...

You would either need another Express to Join or Extend your network if you want to use Airplay in another room from where it is located now.

This is assuming your modem is not wireless to begin with...

The Express doesn't need to be anywhere near your iMac but it does need to be near your modem and plugged into it...

Can you move your modem into the other room?

Well it is already in another room. (stupid setup because our house was bulit in the '20s)

Modem is curently in the kitchen because it needs a phone line.

•Mind you I just installed this interent, so obviously once I have the time I will be routing a phone line to the basement and stashing the modem down there. But that really doesn't matter.

So my iMac is connected to the modem wirelessly. I was under the impression that the express extends the wireless network? Soafter configuring it at first and setting it up, I could then disconnect from the modem and move it to wherever I want. I am guessing this is not so?

The Express will only "Extend" another Apple device... It will not extend a 3rd party device...

You could "Join" your existing network and then it should work for you.

Give Joining a try and it will work...

Setup the express to join my existing network? And then what?

It still has to stay connected to the modem in order to use airtunes right?

So Say I wanted to play my music library in my room upstairs...I would have to either purchase another express and use the two of them together, or route a long *** ethernet cable up to my room??!!

    No.....

If you can Join your existing network, then it will also be wireless...

    See this Apple doc:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4587

All of my Express units are wireless throughout my house and outbuilding....

    No cables attached..

They all join the network which makes them part of the network wirelessly...

All are connected to stereos providing Airplay.

They can even have printers and external hard disks connected to them....

If I select all 3 of them via iTunes to play using Airplay, I can walk from room to room to outbuilding playing the same music in sync.......
