Make sure you are plugging in the USB ports on the back of the computer. The one that is on the keyboard typically doesn't have enough power. If that doesn't work, make sure that Finder menu -> Preferences -> General has all the items shown on the desktop checked, and that you've cleaned your desktop you can see the hard drive and other mounted volumes in the upper right when you View menu -> Sort by -> Kind, and no other Finder windows are open. If it doesn't appear there, check if it appears on Disk Utility. If it doesn't appear on Disk Utility, get one of these data recovery tools: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689

yes disk utility sees it but its gives me no options. the smart status says it isnt supported and the partition map scheme says unformatted. And as i said before this has worked on every computer i tried it on unitl earlier today when i stuck it in a mac laptop, saved something on it then took it out.

The iMac is not a laptop. When you say you stuck it in a laptop, are you sure you plugged it in the USB port? Many of the ports look similar, but aren't quite the same. Be careful you are only plugging it in via USBUser uploaded file Edit: If disk Utility says it is unformatted, there is something seriously wrong, use the data recovery tools I've mentioned.

Yes, for all practical purposes the drive is "damaged". Things like DiskWarrior might be able to salvage it but I am guessing it won't.

I can't explain how your working flash drive got into this condition. Maybe some key cells failed. Maybe you pulled it out or the power failed before you had a chance to properly unmount it (although just pulling it out should usually not be catastrophic).

Note, I edited the post. I realized Disk Utility saw it, so you don't have it in a wrong port. Otherwise Disk Utility wouldn't see it. Clearly this is a case for software to attempt to read through the munged formatting, such as is listed in my tip below. Disk Warrior may be able to do it, but normally should only be run on a disk that is already backed up. From the sounds of it, you aren't in such a lucky position, and really need to read my tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689

I don't think you could stick a usb plug into anything other than a usb socket. But woking on some other machine isn't something you mentioned before. What that a mac? Did you unmount it properly? Not that it matters now. The bottom line is your mac considers it unformatted.

I guess you have nothing to loose by trying to stick it back into your friends machine and hoping for the best (probably won't work there either now).
