waking from sleep mode

Recently took my MBP 15" from SL to Lion. after some difficulties with the install and a replaced HD, I have one lingering issue - it will not completely come out of sleep. I have to hit a key to wake, takes password, but will get the pinwheel and that is it. Have to hit the power button to restart. Any suggestions? I did the recent firmware update.

4 gb memory NVidia GForce 9400M w/ 256mb

MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Standard troubleshootng step for sleep problems is to reset SMC.

Thank you Dominic - did the SMC reset and still will not come out of sleep. I will get the screen to come to life to enter my password and the pinwheel just continues to spin. May I incorrectly labeled my question, is this a screen saver issue??
