I have iCal just as I want it on my macbook but the same preferences are not replicated on my iPad, any reason?

Greetings,

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by "preferences"?

iCal on your computer can sync it's events to your iPad if you either:

A. Plug your iPad into your computer and turn on calendar syncing in iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296

or

B. Sync your iPad wirelessly with your computer using MobileMe or iCloud: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

If you have already setup your iPad to sync over its USB cable to iCal and it is not transfering your events see my post for other steps to try: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3782163?answerId=17778463022#17778463022

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the clarification.

iCal for OS X (your computer) is a different program than the Calendar.app for iOS (your iPad). Consequently, some of the features in iCal are not mirrored on iPad.

The preferences available on iPad can be found on the iPad in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Calendars.

If the preference you are looking for does not exist on iPad, it can't sync from iCal on the computer.

If there is a specific preference you want on iPad, let Apple know: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

As your question is ultimately about iPad and not iCal, you might want to try posting it in the iPad forum to see if there are any available work arounds: https://discussions.apple.com/community/ipad/using_ipad

Cheers!
