Failed: QuickTime Error: -108

Everytime I try to use Compressor to create a file using the 'HD for Apple Devices (10 Mbps). it fails within seconds with an error message of 'Failed: QuickTime Error: -108' . I only get this on my MacPro 12 core. The Macbook doesn't have this issue. I guess the error lies within Quicktime itself. Any suggestions appreciated!

I've been having this problem, too. I had 5 files in a batch to convert, and they did exactly what you said. Then this morning, when I turned on the computer and loaded the same batch, one file went through correctly, and the others failed.

Then I shut down compressor and share monitor, and opened disk utility. I clicked on repair for both volumes that I was using (an external holds the source material, and another external is the destination). Loaded my batch again, and it's currently chugging away at the first file, with the others waiting nicely. Neither disk seemed to have any problems, and they verified correctly, but I clicked repair anyway. It seems to have done the trick.

Before this, I tried doing what it says here: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/, but didn't see any change.

Thanks Russ H. This appeared to resolve the problem. For some rason, in your post, the words 'Trash Preferences' appears as an invalid URL. It took me a while to realize that the repair tool you referred to actually had trashing Compresser preferences as an option.

Thank you. This was fast and easy.

I continue to have this problem. Compressor 4.0.2 will not render my files unless I reset BG processing and run compressor repair. Then it will render the first file and fail the rest. I must then reset BG and run repair again in order to make the next file render, after which the rest of the files fail. This entirely defeats the purpose of batch processing, and I'm pretty upset about it, as it's a brand new, 12-core Mac Pro, and I bought it exclusively for video editing and rendering, and if I can't batch process files, I could have just stayed with my old computer and compressor 3.5.3, which just worked every time.

I had this issue too but the wierd thing was it only happened on my Mac Pro not on the MacBook Pro.

Long story short & after a few calls to Apple, I ended stumbling upon a solution myself by accident...

By opening the inspector and turning OFF the multi-pass option, I no longer get the quicktime -108 error.

Hopefully this will work for others too.

Perhaps I spoke to early. THe problem has re-emerged and the repair tool doesn't fix it. Actually I'm not sure it fixed it earlier as it may have been coincident with one of those lucky moments when it did work.

Wayne Marx. I noticed your problems were the same as mine. WOn't work on MacPro but works just fine on the Macbook Pro. I tried your suggestion of disabling multipass and yes!! Working now.

Irritating though that we have to sacrifice the quality that would be gained with multi-pass. Still, at least I can get 12 cores onto it rather than just 2!

In another thread I discussed some odd Compressor glitches that don't happen on a fresh install on another Mac. Have you tried it with a different, freshly set up User Account? I also fixed some issues by doing a reinstall of Compressor after trashing preferences. If you don't know, the trick to redownload is to trash Compressor, open the Mac App Store, hold down Option, and click Purchases.

Hi David. Thank you. Yes I did create a dummy account and try it and the original (multi-pass) settings work fine which indicated to me it was the user preferences in the original account. I therefore removed those preferences but the problem persisted.

I'm trying your trick on the reinstall of Compressor. In App Store it shows as 'Installed' however under Purchases, it doesn't show up at all !! I have no idea how to reinstall it.

First move Compressor to the Trash, or a backup drive. Open the Mac App Store. If it opens to the Purchased tab, click one of the other buttons at the top to change views. Once you're NOT viewing the Purchases screen, then hold down the Option key and click Purchases. Now in the list of purchased Apps Compressor should show up as Install rather than Installed.

Hi David. but that's the point. Compressor doesn't show up in my Purchases section at all. It is as though I haven't purchased it (although I obviously have). But if I search the app store, and find Compressor and go to it's page, it says 'Installed' so I cannot install it from there. All this is after Compressor has been moved to my trash and computer rebooted. I notice that in the Purchases section, you can also remove items from the list. Then I found that this 'x' simply hides items from the list. Then I discovered that under my account section, there was Compressor, 'Hidden' so I unhid it and now finally it shows up in my Purchases list.

Ok, so I tried again the suggestion you have. For a few seconds the Purchases then show some of my purchases with the ability to install however seconds later, it goes back to normal and shows all my purchased apps but the install option disappears. It is as though it refreshes the page a second time. The same occurs with the apps store on my MacbookPro. I wondered if it was because Compressor is in my Trash. So now I have emptied my trash, rebooted but it still shows as installed.

OK, Compressor should show up in the list when you click the Purchases button:

User uploaded file

The official way to reinstall is to hold down the Option key while you click the Purchases button. I assume it looks to see if it's installed. If it isn't, then it says Install at the right instead of Installed. Again, this is assuming you've trashed the original program from the Applications folder. I can't remember if it's enough to put it in the trash, or if you have to actually empty the trash, or if it also works if you've copied the App file to an external disk and then disconnect that.

If yours is not working this way, or if Compressor is not even showing up, then I think one of two things is going on. #1 - is it possible that you have two different Apple IDs and you're signed in with the one that did not make the Compressor purchase? or #2 - there is a problem with your Apple Account and you're going to have to get help from tech support. If it's the correct account but it does not remember what you have purchased, then you need to get that straightened out.

I'm sorry that you're having these glitches, but this is the accepted technique for reinstalling - I've done it myself.

Hi David. I only have one ID so that isn't the issue. Yes I can see it showing up now in my Purchases, same as your graphic. Problem is I cannot get the 'Install' button back up to reinstall it. Something on my Mac is telling the app store app that COmpressor is installed. I need some way to force it to 're-inventory' what I have installed since it doesn't seem to be very dynamic!
