I have a 15" Macbook Pro that I got in September 2008. It has just developed a crack about 3/4 of an inch from the bottom of the left side in the plastic of the screen frame. I assume this will spread. Any solutions?

You mean the screen bezel is cracked, right? This part - http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Model-A1150-Front-Displa y-Bezel/IF185-086 ?

The repair guides are here - http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro

While the part is not too expensive, the actual repair of either the front or back bezel is rated "very difficult" so might be something you'd want to pay to get done and not try yourself.

I have to let everybody know what happened. I checked out the part and repair instructions that Michael Black posted and determined that the repair looked like it was fraught with too much that could go wrong for me to try myself. I took it to the Apple Store and they said that they didn't have a price for this exact repair, but for a flat fee ($110 parts, $200 labor), they would fix it. I took it to a local repair shop and they said they couldn't even get the part. So I went back to the Apple Store and went for. This was Thursday.

I got a call today, Saturday, informing me that it was ready.

My head is still spinning (in a good way) from the next part. They got the computer and told me they fixed the video card! What? I went there for a cracked bezel. They fixed that, too, and replaced the top cover which had a dent. And it was free. I was stunned and I'm still not sure I understand why it was no charge (I got the extended warranty but that ran out 6 months ago), but Apple just cemented an already tight relationship with me.

BTW, the Apple Store was packed with people young and old, black, brown, white, etc. Not a lot of the cliched geek type. I guess Apple has crossed way over.

Still happily confused
