Q: My new iMac can't connect to my printer

My laser printer (Tektronix Phaser 750P--yes, it's old) is connected to my network with an ethernet cable to my wireless router. My old iMac prints to it just fine, but my new iMac won't. Whenever I try to print the print dialog box shows the printer's name, so the PPD must be in place, but then I get the error message "The printer is not connected" if my old iMac is asleep. I have to wake it up for the printer to work. I've tried everything I can in the Print & Scan and Sharing panels of System Prefs to no avail. One thing, when I select Printer Sharing in the Sharing panel, the printer name does not appear in the printer list. I really need some help because I don't want to have to rely on my old iMac to be able to print.

By the way, I also tried connecting the printer directly to the new iMac's ethernet port and that didn't work either, so I may be missing some file. Any ideas?

Check Printer and scanner software for Snow Leopard & Lion to see if that printer is supported in Lion. Another good read is Printing Overview OS X Lion.

You also may be able to print by adding it as an IP device.

    • System Preferences
    • Print & Scan
    • Press + symbol at the bottom of the box on the left
    • Click IP
    • Add the IP address of the printer (you will need the printer's utilities to supply the IP address)

Thanks rkaufmann87. You're a genius. I don't understand how that worked, but it did.

Mr Kaufmann, you wouldn't have lived in Rome, NY a number of years ago would you????

I have a Phaser 750N being used on a G-5 PPC, 1800, dual, using 10.5.  The Drivers for the Tektronix Phaser 750N are native in 10.5.  Also, I have installed Xerox's drivers.  Usung either a USB cable, or an ethernet cable, the G-5 sees the printer, and selects the correct driver, etc.  When I go to print I get "Printing Paused"  That's all it wants to do.  Over and over....  It will print Configuration reports, etc from the printer console.

I tried your IP idea.  I used IP address of 192.168.001.160. My computer is 192.168.1.149. I also tried all three protocols. I found to even get an inkling out of the printer, I had to use IPP.  After about 5 seconds I would get a message that ........pstsrt. failed, then the printer would reinitialize.

I've spent several hours with Apple on the phone over this.  They've had me load drivers, trash drivers, re-install operating systems, And the list goes on, and on.  Finally they recommended I call Xerox.  Xerox says they no longer support this printer. They have ne call one of their alliliates.  They take the info, but never call back. I'm even willing to pay.

    Any ideas, anybody???????

    Rich--

Where did you get the IP address of 192.168.001.160?

Here is how I got mine from the printer panel--

    Menu

    Configuration

    Network Settings

    TCP/IP

    TCP/IP address

    Mine showed 192.168.001.110

I then went to System Preferences, Print & Scan, clicked the + button, click IP and entered that number. This worked for me. I guess the Phaser 750 printers get no support anymore--if mine starts to play up, I think it may be time to buy a new printer.

    Gary:

I put the IP address manually into the printer. Is an option according to the manual.

The printer is now working with my G-5.  It was an OS glitch.  Had to do a clean install.  I have the printer working both oneither  USB, or wired Ethernet.  Trying to get it to work wirelessly now with a Macbook Pro using 10.7. I get "that it can't connect to printer due to error" messages.  I'm using an ethernet cable from my Cisco 2000 Router to the printer.

I made a stink with Xerox Corporate.  They put me in touch with some very big corporate engineering people.  Gave me some ideas to try. and were "concerned" until I told them problem solved.  They helped me to know it was an Apple problem not a Xerox problem.  Then I got on Apples case big time also. They got an engineer involved who had me run a test or two, (the software didn't work on the PPC though), then they had me send them the About this Mac and it's specs.  That's where they realized there was a OS problem.  Had the Apple store re-install the OS.  They do it for free.
