New AppleTV is announced today
"You'll be able to re-download movies you've purchased on any device, and movies and TV shows now support 1080p."
"Supports 1080p with a "streamlined new user interface."
movies now from iTunes in the cloud - great!

Oh and what's the betting all the 1080p stuff will be US only to begin with?
And the new GUI not available on existing hardware I guess.
That's not clear yet - they revised the generation 1 GUI 3 times twice so you never know, it might get a facelift.
True. But they didnt say it so assuming not.

I'd hazard a guess that they might want to keep a single software for the iOS based AppleTVs that supported both old and new hardware so i think it's a possibility. Remains to be seen if it's a good thing though.

They did it with iPod and basically stopped upgrading ie. iOS5 not allowed on older iPods
I guess we'll know for definite at some stage....
I know what you mean about dropping upport for older hardware quite quickly though.
Not sure I like the interface, but we'll see - looks as though you have to enter and exit categories and won't be able to traverse left to right as you can now.

Will probably also need to scroll up and down across icons.

Which we do now on certain menu lists on the home screen, just with test instead of icons.
According to a blog site I just read:
"Owners of the second-generation Apple TV will be able to access the new user interface with a free software update scheduled to become available today. 1080p video playback will remain exclusive to the new Apple TV."
anywhere on the apple site that confirms this?

I would not be surprised.
May or may not be a good thing.
The A4 is powerful enough to handle a slightly different GUI arrangement, let's just hope it doesn't bring a size overhead that will diminish memory resources used for other things.
I couldn't see anything obvious on the new AppleTV page earlier, but they do tend to mention software updates there if there's one available when a big interface change takes place.
Both run iOS and should be able to support the new software unlike the old AppleTV 1.

I must have missed that bit of the announcement. Might be nice but have no complaints on current GUI.
