I'm wondering whether the personal hotspot-function also will be released for the iPad 2. Shouldn't it just be a software matter? Any information on this?

Nothing has been said that I've seen about the iPad, any model, supporting Personal Hotspot, presuming you mean using the iPad's 3G network. This is a carrier issue, primarly, not an iOS or hardware issue.

Thanks for the response. In fact, along with the release of the "new iPad"/iPad 3 today, the presented a personal hotspot feature for the iPad. But it didn't come clear whether this is only for the new models or not..

I missed that part of the announcement of the new iPad; thanks. No indication yet whether it will also come to the iPad 2; nothing was mentioned in the release notes for iOS 5.1 that I spotted. We'll have to wait and see.

I've also been looking for this information, and been waiting patiently for Apple to implement this.
There is no hardware reason why this cannot be done (as there are cydia apps for this) - so it has to be software.
If iOS5.1 on the new iPad can do it, I'm really hoping the iPad 2 on 5.1 can also do it.
My download of 5.1 keeps timing out, will try this evening when our local network should be quiter. I'll let you know once I've upgraded.
I got my upgrade to 5.1 done via OTA. Unfortunately there is no option for personal wifi hotspot in iOS 5.1 on my iPad 2. I really didn't want to resort to the alternative method to get this to work, but I guess I'm going to have to.
I bought my iPad 2 for this last year, but boy, was I disappointed...
And even more disappointed to see Apple didn´t let customers have this when the iPad 3 came out!
The reason it´s important for me, is that when going abroad, I buy a data package from the local operators there and would share this to my phone and friends phones as well. Shame on Apple.
It would (jail)break my heart to have to find other means to get this feature for my iPad 2.
