Q: iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

    Chris CA:

Thoroughly tested?  So I could find it crash in 5 minutes?  I doubt it.

"Bet it gets sorted very quickly".  I doubt it.  They probably have thousands of crash reports by now and the software has still not been pulled, and no statement from Apple not to install it.  That should have been done.

I wonder how you got your 59,790 points, whatever that is.  Perhaps apologizing for Apple.

An easy way to open the Preference folder under Lion:

I just canceled my pre-order for the new 1080p AppleTV because I am having the same problem with itunes crashing whenever I open the movies tab.  It just blinks off.  Gone.

Never had a single problem until I upgraded to 10.6.  I'm running Snow Leopard on a 3.0Ghz 8-core MP.

The only solution for me was to go back to 10.5.3, which of course instantaneously downgrades the new AppleTV to pretty much the OLD AppleTV.  So... goodbye new AppleTV!  Apple has hobbled you badly with the new iTunes.

    Brilliant!

Same problem as noted with iTunes. If reverting to 10.5.3 how do you do that?

    Thanks.

I wanted to get my iPhone 4 backed up and synced, so I followed this advice and up-date iPhoto to the latest version -- problem solved. (Don't know if I have other problems, but the phone synced and iTunes quit crashing)

It took just a couple of minutes, and $15 -- walked away for awhile as iPhoto installed, came back and synced my iPhone.

    Thanks.

    Ugh.  Still crashing.

I can get it open by rebooting the system.  However, it still crashes periodically, especially when changing artists.

I'm also having issues with iTunes 10.6 crashing after yesterday's update.  When ever I go to the Movies, TV Shows or Podcast sections it crashes.

Best solution is to put the new update in the trash, download pre-update itunes from your backup disc or time machine.  Thank you to early posters who recommended this solution.

I attest, 10.6 was indeed thoroughly tested beforehand--by masochists!

I just wanted to update and say that my guess of iPhoto 8.1.2 being the cause was correct.  I upgraded tonight to 9.2.2 and iTunes no longer crashes for me.  There are obviously multiple crashing bugs in this thread (artwork, iphoto, podcasts, etc).  I would suggest for anyone else experiencing a crash exactly at stage 6 (syncing photos) with any IOS device that upgrading iPhoto resolves the issue.  Maybe the iPhoto library upgrade clears out a bad cache entry, or maybe it's just all that's compatible with iTunes 10.6.0?  For everyone else who has different types of crashes, I would suggest reviewing the crash log to see the thread that caused the crash, and watching the output of the "console.app" to see any other relevant messages.  While I was trying to figure out iTunes last night, I resolved 2 other application crashing issues my mac was having.  Both related to outdated plugins carried over from older OSX versions: a "move_player" plugin installed by some Network TV 'watch online' website in internet plugins was causing an app with an embedded safari version in it to not launch, and an old plugin for quicktime playback of 3vix files was causing a weird random "quick look" crash in the finder.

I was another one with the iPhoto 8.1.2 and iTunes 10.6 crashing when syncing with my iPad at stage 6 (syncing photos). I am using Aperture, so I did not want to buy an iPhoto upgrade. I found a very easy solution. Hold down the option key while starting up iPhoto. You will be asked to choose a Library, or you can create a new Library. So just select "Create New..." and make a new empty library. Now quit iPhoto and then restart again holding <option> to be sure the new empty library is selected. Next time you start up iTunes and begin syncing, it will get to step 6 it will stop and tell you the Library with your synced photos is missing. Tell iTunes not to sync the photos and let the sync finish. Voila no crashing!

Now go into the photos sync options for the device (in my case it was my iPad) and be sure photo syncing is turned off. When you open iPhoto again, hold <option> and re-select your original Library. All is now back to normal, except you may need to leave photo syncing turned off until Apple gets this fixed.

I'm STILL waiting for a general stability update for this latest iTunes release.  Don't have problems with synching with my iPhone 4, nor with anything to do with my iPhoto application on my MacBook, or my photos in general.  My iTunes just runs slow/leggy, and slows down my computer in general a **** of a lot.
