Mar 9, 2012 4:45 AM in response to S'Macby Brian Shaw3,EVERYONE WITH THE CRASHING PROBLEM: TRY S\'Mac's PROCEDURE. IT WORKS!
Fantastic! That worked, and much simpler than downgrading to iTunes 10.5. I had not set any of my devices (iPhone 4S, 2 iPads) to sync photos, but apparently iTunes looks in the iPhoto database anyway. After following S\'Mac's procedure, iTunes no longer crashed, and I am updating the iPhone to iOS 5.1 as I write this. I did discover, though, that iPhoto has to be closed. The first time I started to update, it aborted because "a network connecton could not be started" (although there was nothing wrong with my network). As soon as I quit iPhoto, the update proceded normally.
YAY! Thanks, S\'Mac

Mar 9, 2012 6:28 AM in response to thehogangroupby greggmorris,Yep, S\'Mac's solution works like a charm. I got a different message about the photos on the iPad when I started to sync but I told it to continue and all went well.

Mar 9, 2012 7:10 AM in response to theguypostingacommentby hotoru,Thanks for tips. But, when I try to move iTunes to the trash I get the pop up message "iTunes cannot be deleted because it is required by mac os X" :-( Maybe I will gamble on upgrade to iPhoto. I was holding out on upgrading from iPhoto 8.1.2 because I use Aperture now.

Here's the fix (I spend like an hour coming up with this):
- Quit iTunes (if it hasn't already quit itself)
- Go to /Applications/ and click iTunes.app
- Press command + I to get info
- Edit the permissions so everyone has read/write access
- Move iTunes 10.6 to the trash

Mar 9, 2012 7:18 AM in response to S'Macby hotoru,Yep, this worked for me. Thanks for tip S\Mac. I guess the trick is to remember to start iPhoto with the "fake" library before you sync you device. Hopefully will be fixed by 10.6.1 update soon.

I was another one with the iPhoto 8.1.2 and iTunes 10.6 crashing when syncing with my iPad at stage 6 (syncing photos). I am using Aperture, so I did not want to buy an iPhoto upgrade. I found a very easy solution. Hold down the option key while starting up iPhoto.

Mar 9, 2012 8:43 AM in response to S'Macby Deni Kasama,It seems that this version is really buggy.
I can see at least three different problems: syncing with other devices, changing the size of the cover art and movies in full screen. I don't know if they are related, but workarounds with iPhoto didn't work for me.
I had downgraded to 10.5.3 and then decided to give 10.6 another chance after some users reported the crashes stopped when updating iPhoto. I did it, re-installed iTunes 10.6, opened it and everything seemed fine until I tried to resize the cover art size in grid mode. kaboom! iTunes crashed again.
I was willing to update the software of my Apple TV but I guess I will wait until 10.6.1 is out.

Mar 9, 2012 9:09 AM in response to Deni Kasamaby der KapellMeister,hi there,
just read some things that should help, tried them out all but nothing seems to solve the iTunes crashing
running 10.6.8
no iPhoto
no iTunes plugins
have reïnstalled the previous Itunes and everything works well again.
This must have something o do with the iTunes sync..

Mar 9, 2012 9:18 AM in response to S'Macby Paulyboy69,S\'Mac's procedure worked for me as well. I was able to successfully sync my iPad. However, upon reverting to my default photo library iTunes still crashes when selecting my iPad under "Devices". But iTunes doesn't crash as long as the empty photo library is set as the default. Not ideal but at least I'll be able to sync my iPad and iPhone using this empty photo library until Apple fixes this. And at least I didn't have to spend $15 to do it.
Thanks S\'Mac :-)
Lion 10.7.3, iPhoto 8.1.2, iTunes 10.6

Mar 9, 2012 9:20 AM in response to Paulyboy69by OzziesMAC,My "iTunes crashes after 10.6 update" has nothing to do with sync, it has to do with the size of the cover art for music and movies. If I slide the cover art size bar(Top Right) to a larger size iTunes crashes.

***UPDATE: This has worked for me, and yes, the trick is to open the "fake" library first!
My Setup:
iMac running OS X v10.7.3 w/supp, iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!), iPhoto v8.1.2 because the v9+ is also a piece of #%@! in comparison to v8.1.2, and finally NO iCLOUD!!!
My problem was that after upgrading to iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!) <-- CERTAINLY NOT properly tested or QA'ed (Hey Chris CA ), iTunes worked, except for syncing my iPhone 4. When I would plug in my iPhone 4, iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!) would display it in the left column. When I would click on it to sync it (as its plugged in via its USB cable), iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!) would crash and close almost immediately.
Following the advice of "S\'Mac";
- I disconnected my iPhone, closed iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!), and opened iPhoto v8.1.2 while holding the option key. I created a NEW (aka, "fake") iPhoto Library.
- I closed iPhoto, and reopened iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!), and connected my iPhone 4 via the USB cable.
- Once it displayed in the left column, I clicked on it to sync it, and amazingly enough, iTunes didn't close!?!?!
- I checked the Photo portion of syncing, and since iPhoto was set on the NEW (aka, "fake") library, this had already automagically been unchecked.
- I proceeded to sync my iPhone 4 without error.
- Once complete, I retested this scenario with the original iPhoto library.
- As expected, it continues to crash just as soon as you click on the iPhone in the left column to sync it
So in conclusion, yes, the current options it appears are:
- Either downgrade back to iTunes v10.5.3, which Apple in their ultimate wisdom of our #%@! don't stink, utimately removed because iTunes v10.6.0 (piece of #%@!) is flawless...hahaha
- Or, use "S\'Mac's" workaround for now.
I'm not going to be forced into purchasing iPhoto v9.2.2 (piece of #%@!) in comparison to iPhoto v8.1.2, ...I'll drop Apple like a bad habit first, and revert back to Microsoft....ooooooooooooooo!
"Can anyone remember the iPhoto v9.0 debacle? ...missing data (aka, deleted photos)? ...I do!"
As I stated in an earlier post; "Not looking good for Tim Cook right now, ...here's to the first big crap stain on his record as far as I'm concerned."
