Q: iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

iTunes 10.6 is crashing for me as well. However, my crashes are intermittent... when I was downloading the upate for my iPhone and my iPad, for example. I also have noticed that I get intermittent crashes when it is playing mp3's.

This is very odd because typically iTunes is a very stable program.

I am using 10.6.8. I disable FruitMenu with iTunes, as in the past this program has caused some conflicts. But the problem persists.

While I'm at it, prevoius versions of iTunes allowed for multiple pictures for the cover, and this version and the last got rid of that option. Why does Apple persist in taking away functionality rather than adding to it... and when they do the program is made only less reliable...

    Hi all

Same here. Whenever i get into "grid view" for the cover (hope that is ihe correct term), itunes 10.6 crashes.

I hope Apple will fix that soon

I tried this but it didn't save iTunes. Still crashing every time I click on the device linked to it.

The same here! Only in grid mode. Now I'm using in coverflow mode.

    Apple really messed this up.....

I hope it dosent take weeks to fix that, or that an apple employe would adress the issue.

yeah, mine started crashing too.  it crashes randomly.  sometimes music will play through 6 songs.  sometimes, one.   sometimes, if it's just idling and not playing at all it will unexpectedly quit.  sigh.

Went to the Genius Bar today.  They couldn't fix it.  They suggested I re-install my OS.  If that didn't work (it didn't) they said to re-install the iTunes update (that didn't work either).  So, I'm going back tomorrow.  Hopefully, I can go back to the old version with Time Machine on my external hard drive.  I find it distressing that in 3 days since this post started, it has generated 14 pages of people experiencing the same issue and Apple has totally ignored it.  Kudos on a job well done and excellent customer care Apple.

Several of you have reported a fix involving uninstalling iTunes 10.6 and reinstalling an earlier version, but some of the instructions are beyond me. Could someone rephrase the fix in step-by-step terms? Thanks.

Thousands of people work at Apple ... someone there must read these boards and cotton on when there is a genuine problem, don't you think?

    Reverting to iTunes 10.5.3

    1.     Remove iTunes 10.6

If you try to trash it, or write over it, you will get a message saying that it can't be modified as it is needed by the OS. Select the app and 'Get Info'. In the permissions, change them all to read&write (you will need to type in an admin password). Now you can trash the app.

    2.     Find 10.5.3

If you have a Time Machine backup, then you can restore it from a backup made before you installed 10.6

Note: Once you have restored iTunes, if you try to run 10.5.3 you will get a message that iTunes Library.itl

file is from a newer version of iTunes and you need to upgrade to 10.6. You need to replace this .itl file. You can find it in your home directory, in the the Music folder, in the iTunes folder:

    Home/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl

Restore this file from your TimeMachine backup.

    Note: I also restored my

    Home/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.xml

    Home/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl

    Home/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library Extras.itdb

Once these have been restored, you should be able to open iTunes.

If you don't have a TimeMachine backup of iTunes 10.5.3

    get it from:

    http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-3779.20120119.Bgty5/iTunes10.5.3.dmg

Move the iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml (see above for locations) and put them on your desktop. Install iTunes 10.5.3 then import the iTunes Library.xml file.

    Importing .xml file

    Open iTunes.

Do not add any content into iTunes at this point (such as by purchasing something from the iTunes Store).

Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.

Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file on the Desktop. Click Choose.

More details about this can be found at:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Note, I think your system may now assume that you have iTunes 10.6 even though you have trashed it. Therefore, once Apple sort this out and provide a version that works, you may need to download the full version rather than the update.

Full version can be found at:

I'm having exactly the same problem. Except I can't even open the program before it crashes repeatedly.  I downloaded the new update and this is what I get. Nothing. only worse than nothing.

I went to Apple Store Saturday and the rep I spoke with said he hadn't heard about the iTunes 10.6 problem.  I showed him mine crashing, and asked what's the best way to notify Apple.  He just said to submit crash reports.

So have you guys submitted crash reports?  Just curious.

Thank you very much for your post DozyDog. This worked great for me and solved my crashing issues. I was finally able to get my new iPhone 4s to sync with iTunes.
