Q: iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

I want to try the approach suggested above of reinstalling 10.5.3, but I'm a little apprehensive.  I don't have anything in my Library/Preferences that starts with com.apple.iTunes.

You don't need to delete any prefs.

    1. Go to Applications folder and on iTunes right click - Get info.
    2. Scroll down to Pernissions and set your username to Read & Write.
    3. Drag the iTunes application to the trash.
    4. Drag the iTunes library.itl file in /Music/iTunes to the trash.
    5. Copy the latest iTunes library.itl (with a date) file from /Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes libraries to /Music/iTunes/ and rename it iTunes library.itl.

    That is all.

I reported the crash on full screen video to Apple at bugreport.apple.com, which is where all bugs should be reported.  Today I got an email from them saying that this bug is a duplicate, and that they already know about it.

When and if they will fix it - who knows?

I reported about the crash with album art over 50% at bugreport.apple.com, and they also returned to me today saying it was a known issues and they were looking into it.

So I guess a fix will be out hopefully soon.

I reported the crash related to syncing my iPad with photos being synced to iPhoto 8.1.2 and received an email response today saying the bug is a duplicate and they are already aware of it.

So, we know that Apple knows about these bugs. Hopefully they will all be fixed in a 10.6.1 release, but when that will happen, no one can tell.

I would venture a guess it will happen very, very quickly.

Would be a really bad move if new iPad owners cannot sync to their computer (which requires iTunes 10.6).

Apple released update, but it's for Safari.  Good thing I use Firefox!

I haven't experienced the crashes since updating to iTunes 10.6 but then I haven't tried synching my iPhone or iPad either.

The one problem I have come across is using the Cover Flow view I like to select the full screen view. Since 10.6 when iTunes advances to the next song in an album or playlist it reverts back to the standard view in Cover Flow. I wonder if this is an extension of the artwork bug mentioned by others.

Did anyone else not find the .xml file in the iTunes folder when you went to restore 10.5.3 from a Time Machine backup?  That is what I found.  The current iTunes folder *had* the .xml file and I left it alone and it continues to be modified by iTunes.  But the folder from before 10.6 did not have it.  I don't know if it was an invisible file or what.  Anybody else experience this?

SOLUTION: (If you have a Time Machine Backup)

    1) Open the Applications folder.

    2) Open Time Machine.

    3) Go back in time to a day before you upgraded to iTunes 10.6.

    4) Highlight iTunes (which will be iTunes 10.5.8 or similar).

    5) Click Restore.

This will bring back iTunes 10.5.8. Then delete the iTunes 10.6 application. Now you need to get your old library since 10.5.8 can't open your existing library that 10.6 modified.

    1) Open the iTunes folder in the Finder

    2) Drag the iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library Genius.itl and the other .itl file out onto your desktop.

    3) Open Time Machine.

    4) Go back in time to a day before you upgraded to iTunes 10.6.

    5) Highlight the three .itl files and click "Restore".

When you open your iTunes it should see the old library and open with all your music restored and playcounts/playlists unaffected.

Now we wait for Apple to release iTunes 10.6.1... hopefully sooner rather than later.

    Hope this helps.

I only had a copy of 10.5.2 in Time Machine.  Installing that now - fingers crossed!

And Apple, you should be ashamed of yourself leaving all of us flailing in the wind like this!

No, it is not invisible. You don't need this file. It is created by iTunes only for other applications to use the iTunes library. It is continually being updated because iTunes is continuously being updated.

If you delete it, it will get recreated next time you open iTunes.

Chris CA you did not read my post.  It was visible in the iTunes folder after the 10.6 downgrade, but was not visible when I went back to the 10.5.3 folder in Time Machine.

    I did read your post.

It was visible in the iTunes folder after the 10.6 downgrade

    Because iTunes recreated it.

, but was not visible when I went back to the 10.5.3 folder in Time Machine.

For some reason, it ws not backed up (or you did not see it).

I didn't see it because it wasn't there.  I went further back in time and it was never there.

Is it getting backed up now in TM?
