Q: iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

OK - here's the fix, well, work-around, that is floating around in another thread. If you have iPhoto '09, a.k.a. Version 8, and your iTunes 10.6 crashes at startup then this will help.

Original details mentioned here This helped meRe: iTunes shutting down when selecting device after 10.6 upgrade in a post by Jame McDermott1. He claims he found this on another site but didn't say what site.

    Basically:

    - Quit iTunes

    - Launch iPhoto while holding the option key, wait for it to ask you to choose a library

    - Select the 'New Library' option. You should also make a note about the name of your current iPhoto library shown in this dialog box so you can return to it later.

    - Quit iPhoto after it creates the empty library.

    - Start iTunes 10.6, relax, it won't die!

    - In iTunes, Advanced menu, pick 'Choose Photos to Share...'

    - Clear the checkmark for 'Share Photos From'

    - Hit apply and close that window

Now you have a couple choices. After clearing the photo option in iTunes, you can return iPhoto to your real library and iTunes continues to work, just without photos. I'm going this route for now, and I'll probably upgrade to a new iPhoto as a permanant fix for this issue.

In the other thread, someone mentioned you can import your old/real iPhoto library into the new empty iPhoto library and that seems to address the issue as well.

Enjoy your iTunes 10.6 everyone !!

I can open iTunes, but it crashes immediately when i try to scroll down in my music or books library.

    My workaround:

Go to your music or books library, and choose "list view" instead of "cover view"!

This problem seems to occur only in cover mode, cover flow however seems not to be affected by this problem....

A week later, this is still going on? My computer just asked me if I wanted to download iTunes 10.6. Is this a fix, or is this the same buggy version that will cause me the same problems as last week?

I just solved this issue for those who have Macs. I called Applecare and the gentlemen mentioned if you were running an older version of iphoto (i was running iphoto 09) it was casuing the new itunes to crash. I bought the new iphoto and it fixed my issue.

What if you have no versions of iPhoto and it still crashes?

I upgraded from iPhoto 9 to iPhoto 11 and that's when the crashing began.  Nothing has worked for me, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately, like some of you in this thread that have posted, iTunes 10.6 crashes only when I attempt to sync my 5th generation Nano.  I have a 3 week old 27 inch iMac with the latest version of iPhoto 2011 version 9.2.2.

I have restored my Nano, rebooted my computer (many times!), all my software is up to date, have shut off antivirus software, turned off menu/background programs.

I can sync iPad 1st generation sucessfully.  itunes functions normally otherwise even in working with my 2nd generation Apple TV.

On my slightly older imac with itunes 10.53 and OS 10.73, the Nano syncs without a hitch.

Maybe we are dealing with multiple, different problems.

I love Apple from 15 years, but i think they run too much faster.

We like Apple for stability, reliability, and we buy apps & music because we are trusting in them product.

We use its product also for work not only for hobby...

Apple, please, a little slower, and more controlled from you, we do not give...

We pay for this too much... i hope...

I like my Mac because i turn on it and it run so good.

Less than year old iMac. 6 month old macbook pro. Both have 10.7 with iphoto 11, all upgrades. I keep a large music library on various USB & firewire external drives  (I'm a DJ). Latest iTunes 10.6 upgrade crashes on BOTH machines when I plug in any hard drive. Haven't tried my nano and touch yet. iPad 2 and iPad 1 don't make it crash.

Within 20 second of external drive plugged in, bam, crash on both macs. Did all the work arounds in this forum, including downgrading to 10.5 version. No solution.

I'm very meticulous with my Macs. Permissions fixed in disk utility. ALL my pro DJ software (Traktor, DJay) work flawlessly. This was not always the case. iTunes was always my rock. When things got squirrly with 3rd party software I could always count on iTunes to get me out of a pickle. Well, it seems iTunes is becoming "bloat ware" now. Can you say microsoft?

Too much support for too much different Crap! Books, movies, pictures, podcasts, genius, DJ, Ping, TV, ringtones, itunesU,  sharing, apple TV and grand central for every product hardware apple makes. Here's the BIG problem. When iTunes doesn't work. ALL your go to Apple stuff is up the creek! Pods, Pads...phone, apple TV. And whats the big connection to iPhoto crashing iTunes? Huh!?!

Can ya tell I'm a little bit frustrated?

So it's not just me. I thought it was just my computer. I hope a solution is found soon. My house has about 5 iPods syncing with this iTunes so it'll horrible if it's gone. Sometimes it stays on but then it'll freeze and quit again.

People really should try to read through at least a few pages of this diascussion. If only it were as simple as the iPhoto issue. Problem is there are multiple issues with this release and the iPhoto thing is but one of them. Some of us don't and have never used iPhoto at all but still get crashing in multiple ways. Some of us couldn't even get 10.6 to install properly. It is irresponsible of Apple techs to be telling customers it is an iPhoto issue only. One would almost think it was all a money grab.....a way to sell more software.

I have been very happy with the iTunes software - so much so that I put my whole dvd/cd library into iTunes. After the 10.6 upgrade, I've had nothing but trouble. iTunes crashes when I click on the "Movies" section of my library - please help!

I am using a 27" imac with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. I am using Snow Leopard (version 10.6.8.) My whole iTunes library is located on an external harddrive. I have iPhoto version 8 installed and Final Cut Pro 5.1 installed. Anybody know what I can do to resolve this issue?
