Q: iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I followed the restore advice and it looks like it did restore but now will not launch at all.  It tells me The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?  So I click "Download iTunes and it tells me my software is up to date, yet when I go to launch it, I get the same error.  Just goes in circles.  Now the iTunes icon is in my apps but it will not launch at all!! 

You need to restore more than the iTunes app. There are files in the iTunes folder (Which is located in your Music folder), these files are updated when the new version of iTunes is downloaded. If you follow this thread, you will see some comments about which files to restore.

If your iPhone has already been updated to iOS 5.1 will it still work in an older version of iTunes?

I have the same symptoms as you.  iTunes 10.6 repeatedly crashing upon selecting any connected IOS device.  iTunes also crashes if device is not selected in GUI, but a sync starts.  The sync reaches stage 6: syncing photos and iTunes crashes.  This seems consistent with the crashing thread in the log being "com.apple.CoreFoundation".  One point of interest here: on my computer the iPhoto upgrade has NOT been purchased from the App Store and is still version 8.1.2.  There were no problems yesterday in prior version of iTunes 10.5.3, but maybe it doesn't like the older version of iPhoto?  Anyone else with crashes (not related to iTunes Match -- which I'm not using) have an older version of iPhoto that syncs with an IOS device?

Same problem - itunes 10.6 on Snow Leopard now crashes when album cover display zoom changed...

Mine iPhone 4 and my iPod Touch (4th gen) both have been upgraded to iOS 5.1 and both appear to work OK with iTunes once I got rid of 10.6 and reverted to 10.5.3

Here's the fix (I spend like an hour coming up with this):

1. Quit iTunes (if it hasn't already quit itself)
2. Go to /Applications/ and click iTunes.app
3. Press command + I to get info
4. Edit the permissions so everyone has read/write access
5. Move iTunes 10.6 to the trash
6. Go to ~/Music/iTunes (or wherever your iTunes library is stored)
7. Copy iTunes Library.itl to your desktop to be safe (delete it when you finish the process, this is your 10.6 library which you may still want if you can't fix iTunes after this)
8. Go to ~/Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries/ and copy the file that was created closest to today (in my case, it was one from about an hour before I installed 10.6); the old library you're copying is your iTunes 10.5.3 library
9. Paste it in ~/Music/iTunes
10. Rename the file to iTunes Library.itl
11. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete everything that starts with com.apple.iTunes
12. Download the iTunes 10.5.3 disk image from *****
13. Install iTunes 10.5.3; it should load the older library you just copied to your iTunes folder
14. Open iTunes
15. Play a victory song and wait for 10.6.1 so you don't have to do this again

Just out of curiosity, wondering how many of us are using jailbroken idevices?

Yes, it looks like, in my case anyway, that the culprit was iPhoto v 8.1.2. When I chose "Choose Photos To Share..." from the Advanced menu in iTunes, it would crash, even without the iPhone connected.

I moved my iPhoto Library to another location (I use Aperture now, so that's why I haven't updated iPhoto; I don't use it.) I restarted iTunes, connected the iPhone and synced without any issues. Everything else seems to work fine, no further crashes...

I have an original iPad (no camera) so it was never synced to my iPhoto library, so that may be why I had no problems with iTunes crashing when I synced the iPad.

Per Shawn's thoughts, I checked my version of iPhoto and it was 8.1.2. I gambled spending the $15.00 for iPhoto 11 with the new update and problem solved!!!

I have the same problem of crashing since updating everything today. My iTunes crashes when I click on my iPhone 3G or my iPad 2 to sync them. I can no longer sync my devices - don't care if it crashes when I try to do other things, or at least I can survive - but right now I need to sync!!!

I have the exact same problem as stuker , when I reach about 50% zoom on the album covers iTunes just bombs out.

Also I had only just done a fresh install of Snow Leopard (I had enough of Lion and 'upgraded'!) so there should be nothing else untoward.

Where is version 10.6.1 Apple?

I have an iMac 20 inch early 2008 running OS X Lion 10.7.3.

Today I updated my iPhone 4, iPad 2 and Apple TV 2 to the latest releases.  iOS 5.1 for the iDevices, not sure about the ATV2.  I also own an original Apple TV that has been hacked.

I updated to iTunes 10.6 and immediately it started crashing on launch.

Safe mode, creating a new iTunes library, repair permissions all didn't work.  I use the Wi-Fi sync on my devices and I noticed iTunes start to try to sync with these on startup so I turned off my iPhone and iPad.  Still crashes so I unplugged my Apple TV 2.  Still crashing.

Lastly I unplugged my original hacked Apple TV and iTunes has now been running for about 15 minutes without crashing.

iPhone 4 back on and performed a Wi-Fi sync.

iPad 2 back on.

iPhone still syncing and iTunes crashed again.

So I turned off WiFi on both the iPhone and iPad.  iTunes is happy again.

Plug the iPhone in to sync cable and iTunes crashes again.

It has got to have something to do with the iTunes syncing.

Please release a fix soon apple.

10.6.8 on a 3 year old iMac.

My sequence of events was - upgrade iPad2 to 5.1, then upgrade iTunes to 10.6.

iTunes now launches fine, but does not see the iPad, nor the 5.0 iPhone when they are plugged in.

Nothing is jailbroken.

I have not tried to do anything else with iTunes, justplug in the devices, which then cannotbebacked up or synced since they never appear.

I am considering the reversion to 10.5.3 by downloading it (I dont use timemachine).

Or maybe the purchse of a $15 upgraded iPhoto. Currently we have one person claiming asolution by this means. Has anyone else tried it ?

Does upgrading iPhoto solve the problem ?

Hmm.. my version of iPhoto is 7.1.3, March 2008. How come it's so old ?

Is this part of the problem ?
