Command P keyboard shortcut broken

When I type "Command-P" it is now bringing up the Parental Controls preferences instead of the Print dialogue.

If I restart in "Safe" mode or in a test user account Command-P works to bring up the print dialogue, but when I reboot in my normal user mode it still brings up Parenal Controls.

This happens inall applications.

Print still works from the File menu and it still indicates that Command-P should be the keyboard shortcut.

I don't see Parental Controls listed anywhere in the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences.

I do have Command-P listed in Application shortcuts (I may have put it there while tryingto fix this problem earlier).

I look forward to any more suggestions! (Pardon my slow response, I was waiting to see an alert in my inbox, which I missed.)

You probably should remove it.

Are you sure you haven't installed any macro or shortcut manager, such as Spark, Keyboard Maestro, Quicksilver, Butler, etc?

If no, then the next thing to suspect is a corrupt pref file. Unfortunately, AFAIK, there is no single repository for keyboard shortcuts. I believe some are saved in com.apple.universalaccess.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist. So I'd start by removing these two and restarting. (Don't delete them, just move them to the desktop; you may have to reset some network and other system prefs.)

I have not knowingly added any macro or shortcut manager. I think I did try Quicksilver years ago, but wasn't comfortable with it so I think I removed it.

I removed Command-P from the applications keyboard shortcuts list and removed com.apple.universalaccess.plist and com.apple.systempreferences.plist from User-Library-Preferences.

I just restarted, and Command-P still brings up Parental Controls.

Then I'm fresh out of ideas. Since it only happens in one user account, it's something in the user domain; since it doesn't happen when booting in Safe mode, it must be some third-party software, possibly a faceless process started automatically on logging in. Check for items you don't know about in Login Items, in <~/Library/StartupItems>, in <~/Library/LaunchAgents> and </Library/LaunchAgents>. Use Activity Monitor and check if any of the listed processes could be responsible for this.

I don't find Library/StartupItems in the User Library, there is a StartupItems in the drive library containing AdobeVersionCue and SiCoreService folders. Am I correct in assuming that I shouldn't expect to find the problem in the drive library since the problem only occurs when in my user account?

User/Library/Launch Agents has just 3 items:

com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist

com.adobe.ARM.925793fb327152fd34795896fa1fb9ffa268b2a852256fe56609efa3.plist

com.adobe.ARM.ad895013aeb33ea6e968d9fdc06c0eb42c7c2a5229d98d64ad002716.plist

Can you say anymore about how I would use Activity Monitor to troubleshoot this?

I appreciate your efforts to help me!

This doc

Using Activity Monitor

<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342>

discusses using AM for monitoring memory usage, but it gives the basic idea. You are interested in two items -- the "My Processes" pop-up menu and the list of processes.

Sort them by name, as shown in the pic, then go through them one by one. You're trying to identify the process responsible for the issue. You may copy the list and paste it into a text editor. Then eliminate those whose functions you can figure out. From the pop-up menu, choose System Processes. That will give you another list; as a first approach, you can eliminate all System Processes from your list. Once you've got the list down to those you don't know and aren't system processes, if you can't find anything obvious (eg, "HotKey Server"), then it's Google time.

fane:

That leads me to discover another problem--Activity Monitor freezes with the spinning ball. In 3 trys it has frozen during launch each time. I sent the report to Apple.

I am not quite sure I understand what you mean by "accounts system preferences," but in my Admin account the only login items that are checked are "iTunesHelper" and "SFCoreHelper" (part of Suitcase Fusion 2).

No, the problem does not occur if I log in from a test account or in safe mode.

Mar 13, 2012 1:44 PM in response to JohnMRP

Try removing SFCoreHelper from your login items.

"Accounts system preferences" was the system preferences Accounts panel. You got that right.

You didn't post the contents of the other /Library directories I asked for but since you say you have no problems with other accounts never mind. That /Library stuff would affect all accounts.

I unchecked SFCoreHelper in the Login Items in my Admin account and restarted. That didn't help.

I suppose it may be logical that SF2 might cause trouble, as I don't think it is listed as working with OS 10.6, but it has been working enough that I haven't felt compelled to buy the upgrade. I don't know how to go about uninstalling SF 2.

I looked for the SFCoreHelper file and foound it in:

Admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase Fusion Logs

Other items in that folder include:

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase%20Fusion%20Logs/FMCo re.log

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase%20Fusion%20Logs/FMCo re1.log

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase%20Fusion%20Logs/Font Tool.log

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase%20Fusion%20Logs/sfco re-prefpane

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase%20Fusion%20Logs/SFCo reHelper

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/Suitcase%20Fusion%20Logs/Suit case%20Fusion%202_SDK.log

In the Extensis folkder there is also a folder labeled UTC Logs which contains:

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/UTC%20Logs/FMCore.log

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/UTC%20Logs/utcore-prefpane

file://localhost/Users/admin/Library/Logs/Extensis/UTC%20Logs/UTCoreHelper
