Q: Link data from a spreadsheet cell to database field

I'm using AppleWorks 6, the database component. I was using Bento but it wasn't powerful enough, and FileMaker is to advanced for me. So I found an old copy of Appleworks and built a simple database from it but am having trouble with a simple function...or at least I think it should be simple. Here's what I'm trying to do....

In my database I have inserted a small spreadsheet, and I'm trying to copy or link data from a totals cell in this spreadsheet to a field in the general database, but can't figure out how to do it. I think there must be a simple way to do this but I haven't been able to find it (for some reason I can't access Help in the Help Menu).

Can anyone help me?

"In my database I have inserted a small spreadsheet..."

This intrigues me. Can you describe what you mean by this and how you did it?

Actually I'm not sure what I've done. I'm new to AppleWorks, and databases generally. This is what I've got....

I created a database with a few ordinary miscellaneous fields on top, and then using the Insert Spreadsheet button on the top left, I inserted a spreadsheet. I did this because I was hoping to create a "pay portal". Each record in this database represents an certain investment. The fields on top are descriptive fields, and with the table or spreadsheet I was hoping to create a pay portal where I could record each payment or dividend on a particular asset or investment. But I can see now this is not going to work....

As I said in my previous, I was using Bento, but found it lacked sufficient capability, and so I thought I'd try AppleWorks. I guess I'll try FileMaker again, although last time I found it too advanced for my newbie abilities.

    Clarification....

With my database open, I used the "Spreadsheet Tool" at the top of the panel on the left, the panel with the drawing tools. Below it there is a button for "Table Creation Tool".

Even though AW has a better database then Bento I can't recommend that you start using AW as there isn't any upgrade on newer MacOs and when you computer gets to old you will have big time problems to convert you AW database to anther database.

    Ahhh.. That explains it.

The only time the drawing tools show up in AppleWorks DB is in Layout, the Draw environment where you can inser fixed objects that will become part of the layout shown with each record.

A spreadsheet Frame inserted there will appear with each record (when you choose the Layout into which it's inserted, but has no means of communicating with the DB itself.

PS: I agree with what Fruhulda has been saying—there aren't any good reasons to start an AppleWorks project at this time.
