Do iPad 2 cases fit the " new " iPad?

If the case is flexible, it should fit.

Since none of us have actually seen one I don't think anyone knows for sure. A guess would be that portfolio cases would be more forgiving of a few milimeters here and there, while the more form fitting silicone ones won't be.

As to the smart cover my money is on it working.

I don't think I've read ianything that indicates that the current cases or smart covers won't fit, barring a few exceptions.

I would expect a new line of cases to come out for the iPad.

Smart Covers still work. A friend of mine ordered one with a leather smart cover.

But they could be a different size smart cover... however, I think you're right and that a) many current cases will work and b) new ones will be coming soon. I'm going to grab a fairly low-end iPad2 case to start, and wait to splurge when the nicer, tailor-made "new iPad" cases have been made.

New ones are already 'out'. Targus has announced a line of cases for the 'new' ipad

Many manufacturers were possibly given info about the specs so they could design cases and have htem ready about the same time as the new devices coming out. it'll just likely take a few weeks for them to be everywhere.

I checked with Apple directly and the SmartCovers are the same and will fit iPad2 and iPad3

The new iPad is .03 of an inch thicker than the old one.

So portfolio cases should be ok, but form fitting snap on cases likely won't be.

Screen covers should be fine since the height and width aren't changing

this is my worry... i also have a 2 month old Logitech folding keyboard for iPad2

this is hard shell based and i'm not looking forward to trying to get an iPad3 in there, given that even with something as thin as a ZAGG invisible shield protector, made it "snugg"

It won't be at all long before all the manufacturers bring their new cases for the new iPad to market so I'd wait until after your new iPad arrives. Then choose a case you know is going to fit when you have a wider choice. Just be careful with the device whilst you're waiting and be patient. You've spent a lot of money on the device, so remember... don't buy a cheap case - you get what you pay for.

Is thickness the only difference? Or have they moved some of the ports or switches, etc., on the new iPad? That would be the real concern about cases IMHO. From the Apple website, it looks like these components are in the same places, but I can't be sure.

The thickness is the only difference I see from reading the Specifications at: http://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/
