iOS 5.1 won't upgrade my iPod & iPad 2 on my newer mac, but it will install perfectly to my sisters same model iPod using an old windows laptop in same internet connection in the same house

I am using a mac notebook with iTunes 10.6.

I have an iPod 4g and a iPad 2.

When I connect the devices to iTunes, it asks for upgrade, then check and just stalls checking, and goes into some infinite loop or something.

When I tried using the settings -> general -> system upgrade on the devices, the iPod starts to download then says "An error occured downloading ios 5.1"

The iPad can't even connect to check for an upgrade. "An error occured while checking for an upgrade"

My sister has an iPod with iTunes on a Windows laptop in the same house. I helped her with it and it worked perfectly to download and install. I can't use the windows to install ios 5.1 to mine since the PC laptop is older and limited memory to backup my iPod or iPad.

An older Windows can outperform a newer mac notebook, iPad 2 AND an iPod 4g?

Is there a third way I can try to get the newer ios 5.1 installed on my devices?

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 5.0.1, also iPod Touch 4g

Call in to Apple. I did and if enough people do it they will do something about it.

I am going to wait until Apple guides me through this issue. It works for a majority of people, but a small percentage it is not working. Again, ATV, MBP, and my iPad and iPhone are not able to upload iOS 5.1. 1 Infinite Loop is trying to work this out today. We just have to be patient.

Spent an hour on the phone with Apple Technical Support this morning. They had me jump threw a hundred hoops but nothing worked. I don't think at that time they had any idea that the problem was at Apple, rather than with me. I was finally told to wait a few days and I should be able to download 5.1 on both iPhones.

I agree that Apple is falling apart. I can't even do computer backups anymore. Something do do with a "trial limit of 100MB exceeded". I am simply trying to backup on my own external hard drive. Why are they making things so complicated?

If you have tried all of the methods listed above, could you tell me what error message you got when you tried the instructions I wrote up at the trialsandtribstech.blogspot.com link?

It worked for me because it bypasses the Apple servers and downloads iOS 5.1 from an alternate source... However, if it is not working for other people, I may be able to find out why and fix my tutorial.

I found a solution that worked for me and it should work for most people, but ideally I want to find a solution for everybody.

P.S. My wife and I both have iPhone 4s's and hers worked and mine didn't on the same network... both on the same MacAir. It appears that this problem isn't related to DNS servers or Macs as some would suggest. It could have to do with your device being jailbroken as some have suggested or on a Beta build like mine. In either of these two situations, my solution should work because you aren't downloading from the Apple server and you doing a restore not an upgrade.
