iOS 5.1 won't upgrade my iPod & iPad 2 on my newer mac, but it will install perfectly to my sisters same model iPod using an old windows laptop in same internet connection in the same house

I am using a mac notebook with iTunes 10.6.

I have an iPod 4g and a iPad 2.

When I connect the devices to iTunes, it asks for upgrade, then check and just stalls checking, and goes into some infinite loop or something.

When I tried using the settings -> general -> system upgrade on the devices, the iPod starts to download then says "An error occured downloading ios 5.1"

The iPad can't even connect to check for an upgrade. "An error occured while checking for an upgrade"

My sister has an iPod with iTunes on a Windows laptop in the same house. I helped her with it and it worked perfectly to download and install. I can't use the windows to install ios 5.1 to mine since the PC laptop is older and limited memory to backup my iPod or iPad.

An older Windows can outperform a newer mac notebook, iPad 2 AND an iPod 4g?

Is there a third way I can try to get the newer ios 5.1 installed on my devices?

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 5.0.1, also iPod Touch 4g

I am having the same problem. I have tried everything but am still getting "An error occurred downloading ios 5.1". I have tried doing it through my macbook pro on itunes and it keeps saying "Contacting the Iphone software update server" and doesnt do anything after that... like Charoite said its like its running in some infinite loop. I cant even restore my iphone because it says it needs to update my software first? please help!

UPDATE:

My iPod Touch decided on it's own to accept get in touch with the iPod server and download the 5.1 upgrade from it's built-in system upgrade option. I didn't do anything different, so I don't understand why it did something different. It went through the download and is now fine.

They say insanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results. If that's true, then this glitch has definitely driven me insane then.

But my iPad is still unable to even connect for an upgrade, and iTunes still has this un-ending connection lag. Anyone know how to fix this one before the rest of me goes insane as well?

UPDATE:

I had 27 Gigs free on the iPad, so it wasn't a memory issue, it was some Apple issue.

I took my iPad to work and tried connecting there through the wi-fi at the office, and it connected and uprgaded fine.

So if you are reading this because your IOS can't download, try;

1) use a Windows/PC machine, as it seems more reliable then macs for this download/upgrade

or

2) try different w-fi locations to have the device upgrade itself through its own Settings > General > Software Update

Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave. Apple is losing my confidence. I have to connect my devices to a PC in order for them to update?!!! What the heck!? This is crazy! What the heck is going on over at apple??? Where is it falling apart? First, I had issues getting into my mail as soon as I moved my perfectly fine mobile me account (Still having a hard timke letting go of my other mobile me. It's just so practical!) and now I can't upload my operating system unless I'm on a PC! That is just ludacris!

In California, still cannot update any device: ATV, iPad I, iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1. I have been trying for 18 hours. I have deleted apps so that I have the required 1G space available, still no luck. Weird.

I called Apple and let them know, talked to a supervisor this morning before I had to go to work. They are looking into this, they told me it should not be happening this way. They are working on this today and they may have it fixed. I also heard if you go to a $tarbucks it may work, but why you cannot do it in your own home on your own Mac is inexcusable! 😮
