Mar 9, 2012 4:32 AM in response to Phoenixhikerby pelley,I can confirm this is an iTunes 10.6 problem. I had updated the AppleTV on Wednesday night and everything was still fine. Updated iTunes the next day and the sorting problem occurred.
This cannot be intentional. They already have a sort by date option at the top. It's a bug.
It's compounded by the fact that the sort is chronological-- meaning you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to see the new show you're probably trying to watch. I have hundreds of shows and this is majorly annoying.
Apple, please FIX!

Mar 9, 2012 4:54 AM in response to Darkstar Crashesby Louis Melledy, hmmm, I'll try and see what else I might have set differently but I just checked again and my shows are in order. There must be some other setting other than sort favorites, but that is all i changed to fix my problem.

Photos for MacLouis have you upgraded to iTunes 10.6 yet?

Mar 9, 2012 7:41 AM in response to Michael Allbrittonby Louis Melledy,Yes. I upgraded to Itunes 10.6, Then I noticed the problem, updated Appletv, problem was still there, went to the settings, changed sorting to Alphabetically, I wonder what changing to None would of done?, There are three values in the sort field. Date(default), Alphabetically, and None. Problem gone.
I'm surprised that this hasn't been a solution for anyone else. Maybe there is another setting that I have set differently in AppleTV or Library. Is anyone that is having the problem have their id tags filled out? in the get info in their itunes is the sort album, artist, etc filled out. This shouldn't be the problem, but I'm curious. I tag all my stuff with identify.
There are alot more settings in the Apple TV settings menus. Most of them should have no bearing on this.

Mar 9, 2012 8:12 AM in response to Phoenixhikerby jkhinva,It is definitely an iTunes 10.6 problem. If you revert to 10.5.3, the problem goes away. That said, reverting is not a simple process. Too complicated (and risky) to outline here as it requires Terminal commands and moving/renaming files in a hidden directory.
Hopefully, Apple will get this fixed pronto as it renders the TV Shows library essentially unusable if you have a significant number of shows/episodes already loaded.

Mar 9, 2012 8:39 AM in response to jkhinvaby Phoenixhiker,I think most will agree that the problem lies with iTunes 10.6.
The 3 setting options on the apple tv have no affect on the sorting order. Has anyone figured out what the "iTunes Store Favorites" is? Those settings seem to apply to that.
Louis Melledy, you must have a particular tag that let's your appletv sort correctly, in the mean time, I've created a smart playlist for all my tv shows that places them in alphabetical order although it is ALL the shows without the option to view just unwatched shows. At least the shows are in alphabetical order.
(Create a smart playlist: Under rules, select "Media Kind" "Is" "TV Show". Check Live Updating only.)
If anyone knows how to filter unwatched shows please let me know.
I guess its just waiting for apple to correct this in the next update

Mar 9, 2012 1:49 PM in response to Louis Melledyby adamfromsheffield,The Settings > iTunes Store fix is only for TV Shows you have purchased from iTunes and are stored in iCloud. If you have TV Shows that you are playing via home sharing that you have imported yourself then that's where the bug is.
This is a bug with no current fix, although this bug has been present within the iPad version of iOS for the past 12 months (iOS 4.3 onwards) and has STILL not been fixed regardless of the number of support requests that I have sent to the developer team. They cant say they're unaware of the issue as I know plenty of people that report this everytime there is an update.
Come on Apple, time you sorted this simple issue out.

Mar 10, 2012 11:39 PM in response to adamfromsheffieldby Bernie Case,Oh. My. Lord.
What is Apple thinking? This makes NO SENSE! It's bad enough that smart playlists and playcounts aren't synched properly with iTunes Match. Or, that the iPad sorts TV shows by the show's episode ID and not episode NUMBER(!!!!). I mean, this is a usability problem and if anything, they've just made it worse.I actually prefer the older pre Apple TV OS 4 behavior, where you'd see something like this:
Show > Season > Episode
The "Show, Season # > Episode" behavior is what we've all been living with, and now it's all wrong.
I really hope someone at Apple reads this. I'm tired of dealing with Apple support to try to explain these sorts of obvious problems.

Mar 11, 2012 10:14 AM in response to Phoenixhikerby parlow,I am having the same problem. I've over 4000 tv shows stored on my iTunes library and after installing 10.6 struggle to find them on Apple TV2. This must be a big bug. How do I contact apple to let them know. I tried the support for ATV2 on their website but they are asking for a one off payment as it relates to a product. Not paying that, but does anyone at Apple actually read these posts? Will anything be done? Really, Really annoyed.

Mar 11, 2012 11:10 AM in response to Phoenixhikerby Phoenixhiker,It would seem that Apple does their best to ignore a lot of what is discussed in the forum and they have roadmaps for all of their products ignoring what users would like to see.
Example: I would love to get my old ordering of tv shows with an additional layer of grouping tv shows seasons together, rather than "XYZ Season 1, XYZ Season 2, etc.".
Maybe this problem is a bug, maybe it's part of the roadmap to something different Apple wants to do. Either way, it's annoying and a problem for some of us (maybe we are a minority).
I'm surprised that I haven't heard anyone reporting this in the tech blogs or podcast.

Mar 11, 2012 2:21 PM in response to Damian Smith1by Phoenixhiker,Thanks Damian, the first thing I did was to submit this form before I started this discussion and suggested all those with the same problem to do the same. Some have even called support to complain about this.
We will have to wait and see if Apple does anything with this.
A similar problem on the iPad has been going on for a year where tv shows under shared iTunes libraries are out of order.

Mar 11, 2012 3:03 PM in response to Phoenixhikerby Phoenixhiker,I've decided to downgrade to iTunes 10.5.3 and would like to thank THEGUYPOSTINGACOMMENT for going thru the time and trouble to post how to do this. The link is: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17789831#17789831
This only took me about 10 mins to do. There are only 2 things I would add: iTunes 10.5.3 download is faster thru apple. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1426 just click the link for 10.5.3. Also if you've keep your itunes library somewhere else than iTunes expects it to be, remember to hold the option key and navigate to the correct library.
I've had to update podcasts and apps since I upgraded as well as add any new material since the upgrade, otherwise this was painless and my tv shows are back in alphabetical order. I'll wait before I upgrade that quickly again.
These instructions are for Mac users, I'm sure there are a few differences for PC users.

Mar 11, 2012 3:06 PM in response to Phoenixhikerby KeithJenner,Just one word of warning to anyone considering downgrading iTunes. Both the new ATV and new iPad state 10.6 as a requirement, so if you are buying either of these then you may have to upgrade again in a few days.
