iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 (9A405) unable to access the update server, not through iTunes 10.6, neither from the iPhone itself (OTA update).
There are reports about unusual and violent solar storms.
Would that be affecting the server? I have no problems dowloading mail, or web surfing. Tks.

I think there are may users trying to download the new iOS, did you try to update from the phone directly?
I have the same issue as Charly and @ Ingo2711 when I tried directly from phone I got message "An error occurred downloading IOS 5.1".
This method was suggested by user 'vincas' in another thread: "Try using a different wireles hotspot to connect."
I'm updating at work and am lucky enough to have a number of wireless hotspots to choose from. I was getting the error message, so I selected another wireless hotspot, my iPhone connected immediately to the software update & downloaded it.
Might be worth a try if you can.
I don't know how a different Wifi hotspot would help, does not make sense but hey I'll try it, heading out for coffee before work and still have time I'll try there on their wifi. Thanks

I'm replying to myself, in order to update my previous post.
1. I've succeeded to update my iPhone to iOS 5.1.
2. Disclaimer: I'm reported what happened, I'm not sure this is *the* solution to the problem.
3. iPhone connected to Macbook via iTunes 10.6, and trying to access the update server, as it had been doing for the past two hours.
4. In the iPhone, I updated the backup to iCloud.
5. Upon completion of the backup, iTunes ("update iPhone") reported that the update was being downloaded.
6. The rest is routine.
I have not yet tried this on my iPad, iPod.
So far so good.
I was having the same problem at home. I couldn't download the update OTA on my phone or through iTunes. I read the suggestion about trying a different wifi network. I tried again when I got in to work and the download started immediately. I've never had a problem downloading other updates at home before. I wonder what the problem is now?
Someone else posted to change your DNS servers to Open DNS
I tried it and all 5 of my devices started downloading immediately

I have Sky in the UK... Rules that one out. It must be Apple!
