I already have gig of ram on my mbp. Is it possible to upgrade to 16 gigs of ram?

Depends which version of MBP you have. The 2011 models will do 16gb, although not officially supported. Any model prior to that maxes out at 8gb.

You can go to the OWC or Crucial websites and enter in the pertinent data of your MBP and they will tell you the specifications and exact maximum amount of RAM.
