iphone 4s could not activate mobile data network after update to ios 5.1

I am having the exact same problem, can not connect to mail or safari and get same error message, I have tried resetting network connections and a hard reset and still have the same issue.

I am also on Orange UK.

I had the same issue this morning (with a 3GS after update to iOS 5.1), but it turned out that the update had wiped the APN settings. This can be reset by going to

General > Network > Mobile Data Network

and re-entering the APN, username and password (this is usually a standard item, check the Orange webpage for further details).

Oh dear, I didn't know that the 3GS did have something the 4S didn't have... :-) Mind you, it could be that you're tied to Orange, whereas mine was never tied to a particular network.

I had a quick browse around the Orange Website, and all I could find in the short space of time was the suggestion to reset the network settings (General > Reset > Reset Network or something like this). But obviously I don't know if that works, because mine now works fine....

I'm having the same problem and I haven't even updated to the 5.1 yet.

Im have the same problem too! iphone4 on PAYG-Vodafone.

Cant seem to resolve it.

Tried a hard reset - nothing achieved.

If you're with Vodafone, then it can't (or shouldn't) be just an Orange glitch...

Well, a few minutes after a hard reset, still got that message.

I went to App Store on iPhone, same message appeared, and then a few seconds later, it informed me I had 5 updates. Told it to update all, checked Safari and it is now connecting to the interwebs.

Haunted iPhone?

It was a country wide issue.

I have upgraded to ios latest version (5.1) today and I have the same problems

Get the message 'could not activate mobile data network'

after checking settings 'enable 3g' is set to on; 'mobile data' is set on.

I have soft reset / hard reset / reset my network settings - still I can not connect .... I'm on O2 anyone else on O2 had this problem ?

Upgraded yesterday evening and all seems to be working - have used the interwebs from my iPhone this morning around 90 minutes ago without a problem. Tried again whilst writing this and all is as it should be...

Very odd - but it seems to definitely be an infrastructure glitch rather than Apple/iPhone/iOS.
