Importing iPad 2-created videos into my MacBook Pro-based iMovie... problems!

I have a new-ish iPad 2, and when I uploaded the videos I shot with it onto my MacBook Pro--and then tried to put them (.mov files) into iMovie, the image shows up very distorted (stretched from side to side). I then used MPEG Streamclip to convert one video to an .AVI file as a test, but now that clip shows up in iMovie as very narrow from top to bottom, which is odd. Any ideas, please??!?? I would like to upload my videos from my iPad into my MacBook Pro, and then work on that, since I prefer using a "traditional" keyboard and larger screen than on the iPad 2 (and I haven't yet purchased iMovie for iPad)!
