Creating a jewel box label/cover

Does anybody have any suggestions for a program that can help me create a nice looking cover for jewel boxes? Right now I'm doing lots of improvising and the results aren't as "professional" looking as I would like.

Thanks.

Hi Linda,

well.... I stumble over nice looking...
beauty is in the eye of the beholder? 😉

you get all kind of "templates" on the net, which fit into the cases, but that wasn't your question, right?

for me, nice means simple, plain, clean.... what is the key visual of your movie? "a day in the zoo" could show the enterance, "white wedding" shows Billy Idol... oops, no, bride and bridegroom... so, what is telling the story of hte movie with a single frame? what is the title of the movie?

... just as an example, clean vs. .... "colorful"

have a look at movie posters or have a look in the iDVD templates to get inspired....
for the "tech inlet", what chapters, credits, used music etc I would use templates, search the net for jewel box inlets/cover....

Thank you for your input, Karsten. Actually, however, I really am looking for templates. I have lots of creative ideas (looks like you do too!), but am wanting an easier way to implement them.

Right now, I spend way too much time getting the cover "art" sized as I would like and cutting, pasting, and so on. I'd love a template that I can plug the picture(s) I want, text, etc. into and be ready to print.

Linda

P.S. I really like your samples... Gives me more food for thought!

Hi Linda,
thanks for your compliments, just a quick'n dirty 5min photoshopjob... 😉

googling "templates dvd cover" gives zillion of templates; it depends on what app your using for creating your covers.... Apple users probably are little handicapped.....

but in most design software, you're able to create "own templates", so you just have to measure&paint once the borders/crease lines; and some manufacturers of software offer on their webiste templates; for Apple's Pages I just found this: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050321134503738

Sue,

It is a cold, stormy day where I live. Perfect weather for working on my latest DVD and related cover. Thanks for the pointer.

I love this site. I don't think I've ever had a computer problem that I haven't been able to solve using some of the tips I've learned here.

I surely appreciate that you took the time to share your knowledge.

Cheers,
Linda

Linda,

I was going to recommend Discus, if no one else did. It's very nice for jewel boxes and CD labels.

However, be warned: After you have made a very nice looking peel-and-stick DISC label, and stuck it on your DVD, some 'home' DVD players (the ones connected to your potential audience's TVs) may not be able to play back your DVD.

I have never had any playback problems with labeled audio CDs, but after distributing about 20 labeled DVDs, I got reports back that 3 or 4 had playback problems - usually reported as 'sticking' or just stopping. After much troubleshooting and research, I believe the problem was due to my peel-and-stick labels.

Several theories are circulating - perhaps the labels cause a slight unbalance, and because home units have less sophisticated error correction than computer DVD players, they are easily overwhelmed by small tracking errors???

Safest to use only the little silver-dollar sized ('hub') labels with DVDs, or get a printer which will print directly on the discs.

Do you think even the little ones would cause a problem?

I almost bought a printer that would print on DVDs, then read a number of negative comments about ink not drying, etc... that I gave up on that idea. Is it your opinion that I'd be better off printing directly on the DVD than labeling it? If so, do you know what brand DVD-RW would be best? (I remember reading that special "printable" ones are required.)

It is interesting, all the information (sometime conflicting) this forum offers. It surely does give one much to think about.

Thanks for your thoughts.
