Finally hooked up my apple tv2 as I got the tv but now it won't download the new apple tv update that just came out or any of the other updates
that it should have. 4.3, 4.4, etc.
I have gotten only Can't update at this time? Are the servers that busy? My wireless lets me go to internet but can't get sharing working either
I am running Snow Leopard. 10.6.8
iMac 24, Mac OS X (10.6.7)
restart the ATV and try again. iif that doesn't work restore it using itunes. Itunes will download the latest software for the ATV
how are you trying to get it to update? go settings>general>update software. it should either update or give you an error why.

You can thank your isp. I had the same problem, open DNS should help ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS ) This is what i done: Go to System Preferences. Click on Network. Select the first connection in your list and click Advanced. Select the DNS tab and add 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 to the list of DNS servers. Click OK Now, connect you ATV to your mac via micro usb cable, select restore and thats it! Then, you can switch back to your previous dns.
Apple recommends you only use the DNS settings provided by your ISP, doing otherwise may affect how quickly your rentals download from the iTunes store.
I did that and it just says Cannot update at this time, try later... no other information.
settings show a good signal, and I did the software download test thing... na da..
Ok.. did the restore thing and it shows all the settings, etc in the network but I still can't connect to itunes as it doesn't show appletv like it does for my ipad. so haven't been able share files either.
Signal is with all bars so wireless is working but stil get message Can't download apple tv at this time, try later thing. Been trying for 2 days now.
????

I've been trying for two days now with no joy - maybe it's because so many people are trying to update and there's a problem at apple's end. I've never had a problem with software updates before so maybe it's a bandwidth problem or something like that.
thanks awfully, issue was that... now i click "software update" and it started instantly, it downloading upgrade in this moment...
Followed most of Sleepness90's method. Changed my router's DNS to: 208.67.222.222 and did the same in the Apple TV settings and was able to download the new software 5.0 straight away. I'm sure it shouldn't be this complicated - it never has been before - so maybe it's a bug Apple need to fix.
I had the same problem. I changed the DNS address as suggested and hooked it up to my Mac with usb and it worked! Then go back and delete the DNS change and everything back to normal. DR
I'm not sure about this. They can't expect non-technical users to go in and change the DNS when the ATV has an update. It's most likely just busy servers. I am a technical savvy user and I don't want to bother with changing the DNS. It should just work. And right now it's not downloading.
I also need to figure out why MLB has disappeared from the Internet menu…
I completely agree with you, it should be Apple simple. But it is not, for the first time i had problem with updating (iPad, iPhone and ATV2). Its really annoying, everyone expects itll just work.
I miss NHL Gamecenter all the time, in my location Czech rep. the is just MLB,NBA, no NHL. I have GC season subscription, ATV2 is officialy sold in Czech. I hate switching between locations a re entering my password fo czech store.
Agree on the " it should be Apple simple" everything else is working but not the update Apple TV software. Not a happy camper. 😟
