iOS 5.1 Update: No Sound

I updated today with no problems. try resetting your phone and see if that helps.

Did you accidentally toggle the switch on the left side of your phone right above the volume buttons? If it shows an orange line sounds are off, and you just need to slide it up.

If that's not it go to your settings>Sounds> and make sure your Ringer and 'Change with Buttons" shows on and the sliders is all the way to the right. Not sure if there's anything else I'm missing.

No - a reset is not a restore. Hold the Home and Sleep buttons in - ignore the red shutdown bar: your screen will go black. KEEP HOLDING THE BUTTONS DOWN until the Apple appears - then you can let them go.

This is effectively a reboot - complete system restart, and clears RAM and does other techie things.

It's surprising how many problems driving owners crazy are cleared by a hard reset.

A reset just did it for me.

I have the same problem. Right after installing 5.1. Tried resetting all setting and a hard reset, neither helped. Mute switch is NOT on. When I press the volume up/down keys the volume 'pop-up' appears but without any indication of any volume level.

The ringing and calls work fine (including speakerphone), but no sound from apps, Siri, etc.

I had a few people come to me with this problem. (I am an iOS Developer, and my friends and family know this, so they all come to me) The people with this problem all had iOS 5.1's public release on an AT&T iPhone 4S. Simply, a hard reset fixed them all. (One was stubborn, but it worked after the second hard reset)

If you are still within your warranty, including an extended AppleCare warranty, Apple should replace your phone for this problem. That would be the first step. Otherwise, try backing it up and restoring from the backup, and if that doesn't work still, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider... although this will almost definitely cost you a bit.

It may just be easier to get the IPSW for iOS 5.0.1 out of your computers stored files, and install that by Option-Clicking on a Mac (I'm not sure of the Windows Command, but it is doable on Windows too) and locating the old IPSW. It should install fine, and if it doesn't, put your phone into Recovery Mode and try again. The save location for old IPSWs on your Mac or PC can be found by searching your files, or you can do an online search to find out where they are. As far as I know, iTunes should hold onto these files for you on whatever OS you have. Make sure you are using iTunes 10.6 as well.

If you do all your updates OTA (Over The Air) with Software Update on your device, see if you can get the file from a fellow iOS user. Anyone using iOS 5 that got their device before it came out and updates from iOS 4, should have at least the original iOS 5.0 IPSW file. Of course, you would need the one for your phone, and the 4S shipped with 5.0, so you'd have to find the 5.0.1 IPSW from a friend with a 4S.

I'm sorry the answer isn't more simple, but Apple doesn't always make it the easiest to find old OS versions. They want users to stay up-to-date as much as possible. My last idea would be to find a developer who can access the archives of prior releases; as long as it is a public release version and not one of the developer-only betas, it should be okay under their License Agreement with ADC to share the public release files.

I just solved the exact same problem on an iPad 1 (no sound after iOS 5.1 update) by changing the function of the physical side toggle switch from locking rotation to mute/unmute in Settings->General, then using the switch to mute and unmute the iPad once. After that, sound was back. I had tried the hard reset recommended above before, but it hadn't helped.

So, a hard reset didn't work for me, neither did reset all settings.

After Macteen's comment I did two more hard resets, and it brought back Siri's sound, but still no app sounds.

So I did an 'erase everything' and restore. That worked. All sounds are back. It was a bit of a pain - especially since I don't normally sync apps on this phone (my iPad and my wife's iPhone also hook up to this computer, and we don't want to 'cross-polinate' apps), but it worked... better than exchanging for a new one.

Did you did the 'erase all content and settings' before the restore? Or did you just restore? If you did the erase first, and it didn't work, then you're probably out of options. Since your calls are muted, it sounds like a bigger problem then most other people on here.

I would suggest giving Apple a call, let them try a few things, and then have them replace the phone.

It might be a stupid question!

Are you sure that the volume key is not on mute?

This is definitely a software bug. After the update yesterday, my 4S has had intermittent audio, with Pandora, with videos, with just the keyboard, with youtube, with many applications. I feel confident it has nothing to do with a settings. Its a bug that needs to be fixed by Apple. Its unfortunate, but i think because my update took place via public WiFi, it may not have updated completely properly. I am hoping Apple comes out with a fix real soon because this is quite frustrating. If anyone has a real fix please share.
