Is there a way to update without software update?

I own this type of iMac and it runs Mac OS X 10.2.8 it is also a G4, Now i've read and read and READ but still the iMac refuses to update, in the Apple menu where it should be there is a blank space. Any help? or ideas

You will have to purchase a retail Panther disc to upgrade, the disc has a black face, do not get a disc with a grey face, those are machine specific.

Only if your processor is faster than 867mHz and you have sufficient RAM. Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and post what it shows for "processor" and "Memory." This is how those values looks for a PPC Mac:

Be aware that, unless you are a very smart and patient shopper, the required full retail install disk sets for Mac OS 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard can cost more that the market value of a used G4 iMac.
