Ejecting iPod problems

Ok, here's the lowdown on what's going on:
I have a Sony Vaio Computer and a 5th gen. 30 gb black ipod
After plugging the iPod into my computer through the provided USB cord, it updates the ipod with songs, videos, photos and whatever it may need to
Once it is complete, it will not let me eject the ipod
I am using it in a disk mode
I have tried pressing ctrl altdelete and closing baiscally every program ipod/itunes related or not and that didn't help/make it work
I have tried going thru my computer's management stuff and ending the ipod service manually and that didn't help/make it work
I have tried using the display icon by my clock to "safely remove hardware" and it won't eject
I have no antivirus programs or antispyware programs that would be scanning the ipod 4 viruses
The updates still work and all, but I unfortunatly have had to disconnect the wire from the pod itself while the do not disconnect sign was blinking
I have tried restarting itunes and that doenst work or help
I have tired right clicking on the drive for the ipod under my computer and it wont eject the ipod
The only affect I have ssen so far is that I have lost song album pics for the songs that had it on my actual ipod
I do not wish to have any more problems past that
Can anybody help me please?
Thanks,

DK

I have the exact same problem...

Plug in my iPod; iTunes says "okay to disconnect" but the iPod continues to flash "Do not disconnect".

Try "ejecting" the iPod from iTunes and get the message of "The iPod "xxxx's iPod" cannot be ejected because it contains files that are is use by another application". But what other application?!?!?!

I have even tried resetting the iPod (of course this clears all files) and rebooting my PC and when I log back into my PC I than get the message that the file "\iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesPerfs" is corrupted... great so is there away to replace the "iTunesPerfs" file on the iPod to an uncorrupted version?

Continually having to reset the iPod and reinstall the updates helped once and now back to the cycle of not being able to disconnect and getting the corruption error.

Anyone else experience these problems?

same here. i think it's the exact same problem i am having as well.
i used to have a 20GB clickwheel iPod, and the iTunes worked just fine. But recently i bought a 30GB video iPod and everything has gotten messed up. the iTunes freezes most of time and it won't let me eject the iPod either.
when i push the little eject iPod button in iTunes here's the message that shows up:
"The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application."

then i try to manually right-click on the icon from My computer and the following pops up:
"'Removable Disk (G:)' is currently in use. If you eject this disk now, you may lose data in any open files. Before ejecting the disk, make sure that all files are closed and no mutimedia files (such as music or video) are playing."

and if i push Try Again, i see this warning:
"(G:) is currently in use. If you eject the disk now, you may lose data in any open files. Before ejecting the disk, make sure that all files are closed and no multimedia files (such as music or video) are playing."

but there are no programs that are using the files at the time. it's getting really frustrating. help please!

Hey guys seems like we all have the same problem: just joined here and did not know how to use the board so i posted this but on my own and not in this thread. so here you go.

I just got my 60 gig video ipod loaded up the software on my Dell windows xp media center. All was going well. loaded up a bunch of songs - everything was still fine. then i followed the instructions for loading some images (15) using the brouse function (broused my a file in my images file structure)and chose a file with 15 images in it. The ipod then went into the dont disconnect state and staid thier for over an hour. I followed the instructions for forcing a disconnect and a window popped up saying that the "ipod cant disconnect files are in use by another program" I then followed the restart instructions and as my computer was restarting it then hung (never did that before). in desparation i had to cut the power to it. that worked but every time i reconnect my ipod it dose this. It does however work (when disconnected) and the images are on it. New and lost!

In the case of a Mac, the program that it's using the iPod it's Finder. I finded out in this way:

Go to Terminal and type "df" (without the quote marks, obviously 😉 ; it will show you all the things that the OS has mounted (like hard drives and other funky stuff). There have to be at least two HDs. the code of them will look like this: /dev/diskXsX (where X is a number) you will know which one is the iPod, the code provides you with other info like Capacity and usage %.
You can check out all the programs that are running on any given HD if you type in your Terminal window lsof/dev/diskXsX (you can choose your drive from the list that you just pull out). If you're updating your iPod and run this test during that, you'll find some things happening: a song is active, some iTunes things also and the Finder will be using the ._Trashes files. If you do the test when the iPod is sitting there whithout "nothing to do", you'll most likely get only one line of code telling you that Finder is doing something. You can "force eject" a given HD if you're desperate if you type hdiutil eject -force /dev/diskXsX.

I just really tried everything and this worked but it's really annoying to pull Terminal out everytime you want to eject the iPod. Since it was the first time the iPod was updating from the Mac, I had some problems ejecting it. At the end, when it finished updating the songs, videos, contacts, iCal things and all that stuff, I was able to eject my iPod without any problem and the problems seemed to be solved by itself (I don't recall doing anything else or changing any other setting). I tried changing the "use iPod as a Hard Drive" setting and either way it didn't work.

Hope this helps for some of you!
