“Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading OS 5.1″

Hi there,

I have the same issue - I'm getting the same response with my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2. It doesn't matter if I try and update over Wifi or while connected to iTunes on my MacBook Pro.

Could it be an issue with my Airport Extreme?

I am having the same issue, with iPhone 4 & iPad 2.

Everythings else(wi-fi, internet connection, wireless) seems to be all OK.

I don't think it's related to Airport, as I have my Mac Mini connected to our wireless router via ethernet cable (because I could never get Airport to not flake-out regularly). I've seen suggestions that it could be related to router firewall, which I am starting to suspect in my case, since I can't get the update via iTunes or OTA via wifi.

On your Mac

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.

Select the network connection service you want to use (such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unless you named it something else) from the list, and then click Advanced.

Click DNS, and then click Add ➕ at the bottom of the DNS Servers list. Enter the IPv4 address for the DNS server.

and then you can download the update via itunes

dont forget to put the original DNS back after the download

This would make sense. I have had wi-fi issues on public networks until I reset my network settings.

But I'm thinking I may wait to update for a little bit, yet. I've been reading some really scathing accounts of 5.1 issues. I just switched late last year from a Droid (HTC Incredible) that became problematic once Verizon rolled-out the Gingerbread (2.3.4) update. I'm leery to "early adopt," now.

Ahhh...wait, I see, reset the DNS settings on my computer, not my phone. Though I'm suspicious that the problem may be the phone, given my past network access issues.

actually you change the DNS on your computer if you want to update via itunes

and if you want to update OTA (directly from your iphone)

you can change the DNS on your iPhone.
